Less than 24 hours after a violent antisemitic attack in New York City, Gov. Kathy Hochul made an unscheduled stop on Long Island \u2014\u00a0for Shabbat dinner at The Hampton Synagogue. There, she rushed to reassure congregants she would be doing everything in her power to protect the Empire State\u2019s Jewish community.<\/p>\n

A day later, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore was in that very same room in Westhampton Beach \u2014 speaking to the congregation and answering tough questions about Israel.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t a coincidence.<\/p>\n

In recent years, what started out as an informal East End gathering place has quietly become one of the country\u2019s foremost stages for Jewish civic and political life, with members including Patriots owner Robert Kraft, celebrity jewelry designer Lorraine Schwartz, Steve Witkoff, President Trump\u2019s special envoy to the Middle East, and many philanthropic members all passionate about global affairs.<\/p>\n

In this place, political hopefuls, business and thought leaders from all different ideologies come to speak \u2014\u00a0directly to one of the nation\u2019s most influential Jewish communities.<\/p>\n

Sandy Cahn, who sponsors the synagogue\u2019s Stewart Cahn Global Breakfast Forum, said that\u2019s exactly why the politicians keep showing up.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a really important way to reach our community,\u201d Cahn told The Post. \u201cSometimes it\u2019s controversial, sometimes it\u2019s not. The rabbi is really asking tough questions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Much of that influence traces back to one man. <\/p>\n

Congregants describe Rabbi Marc Schneier as an equal part spiritual leader and ringmaster. A larger-than-life personality, with a uniquely colorful life, whose relentless energy has transformed the congregation into the Hamptons\u2019 de facto Jewish town hall. <\/p>\n

They don\u2019t just come for the speakers. They come for him.<\/p>\n

The charismatic Rabbi, who founded the congregation in 1990, channels a Tony Soprano energy and jokes that he always wanted to be \u201cDon Schneier.\u201d A little bit show business, a little pizzazz, he peppers conversations with stories, Jewish geography and blunt political opinions.<\/p>\n

While enjoying an onion bagel with lox, the Upper East Side native boasted he pressed the governor three separate times on whether she would condemn mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani\u2019s comments about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a virtual Meet The Press here on Sunday,\u201d Schneier told The Post.<\/p>\n

Hochul\u2019s appearance, which she had already done a handful of times, underscored why political leaders increasingly seek out his community.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very progressive in thinking, but a rabid dog for Israel,\u201d the New York native said, before adding that he didn\u2019t find the governor\u2019s response to be adequate.<\/p>\n

What began as a casual meeting in Schneier\u2019s living room 36 years ago has evolved into far more than aa typical house of worship \u2014 drawing Bill and Hillary Clinton, Michael Bloomberg, Andrew Cuomo, Eric Adams, Marco Rubio and Bruce Blakeman among many others.<\/p>\n

And these are not canned appearances, but intimate, interactive meetings with a politically engaged, philanthropically minded, and arguably deeply influential and deep pocketed audience that is not afraid to ask substantive questions.<\/p>\n

Unlike tightly choreographed campaign events or Manhattan fundraisers, appearances here are intentionally intimate. Politicians linger after services, answer questions from the synagogue\u2019s heavy hitting congregants, and engage in unscripted conversation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important for the politicians because we\u2019ve defined ourselves as the summer destination for the American Jewish community,\u201d Schneier said.<\/p>\n

But Schneier insists the synagogue\u2019s influence stems not from politics but from the eclectic and welcoming community he spent decades building.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy focus is never to impose, rather to expose people to different points of view, and that\u2019s also been my rabbinate,\u201d the 18th-generation rabbi told The Post.<\/p>\n

That philosophy has helped create what congregants describe as one of the Hamptons\u2019 most diverse religious communities, bringing together people of different political views, professions and observance under one roof.<\/p>\n

Of his guests, the rabbi said they welcome the variation in perspectives. And according to Schneier, they seek him<\/em> out.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarc understood from the beginning that people wanted more than services,\u201d longtime congregant and president of the synagogue Jeff Zuckerman told The Post.<\/p>\n

Developer Alex Witkoff, a congregant \u2014 and son of Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff \u2014 who is also the leader of the synagogue\u2019s Holocaust Memorial art project, said Schneier has transformed the synagogue into the epicenter of Jewish life on the East End.<\/p>\n

\u201cRabbi Marc Schneier is larger than life,\u201d Witkoff told The Post. \u201cHis tour de force personality and bold, colorful perspective have made The Hampton Synagogue the center of Jewish life in the Hamptons.\u201d<\/p>\n

He credited Schneier\u2019s ability to connect ancient teachings with current events, politics and culture for attracting an unusually broad audience, making the torah feel timeless.<\/p>\n

That approach has proved valuable at a time when many religious institutions are struggling to attract members.<\/p>\n

Nationally, synagogue membership and religious participation have declined in recent decades. Yet, The Hampton Synagogue now counts roughly 500 member families. It can draw more than 1,000 worshippers during peak summer weekends, many spilling onto the patio.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my wildest dreams, I never thought it would amount to what we have today. It\u2019s more than just a synagogue,\u201d Schneier said with a laugh. \u201cIt\u2019s like a Jewish country club.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never been to a kiddush where every week it\u2019s like a bar mitzvah in my life,\u201d actor and member Tovah Feldshuh told The Post. \u201cOn August 5, I\u2019m going to an omakase dinner at the shul.\u201d<\/p>\n

For veteran public relations executive Ken Sunshine, whose longtime client Barbra Streisand even donated to the synagogue in his honor, the draw has always been Schneier himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy wife and I are Jewish, not religious at all, but we\u2019ve adopted a verb in our vocabulary: \u2018to be Schneiered,’\u201d Sunshine told The Post. \u201cHe\u2019s a great organizer. There\u2019s no secret why it\u2019s a thriving congregation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jewish activist and longtime congregant Ari Ackerman said Schneier possesses an unusual combination of pastoral instincts and entrepreneurial vision.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s not just a rabbi\u2014he\u2019s a brilliant entrepreneur and marketer,\u201d Ackerman told The Post. \u201cIf he wasn\u2019t a rabbi, he\u2019d make millions in marketing.\u201d<\/p>\n

As antisemitism continues to rise, Schneier believes the synagogue\u2019s continued growth reflects a broader shift within the American Jewish community.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s this thirst not only for Jewish identification but Jewish knowledge,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve built a political program that\u2019s really expanding people\u2019s horizons. This synagogue is all about growth.\u201d<\/p>\n

That growth was on full display this weekend.<\/p>\n

By Sunday afternoon, the forum had welcomed Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, who told congregants he was \u201cnot confused about Hamas or Hezbollah and who they are\u201d or \u201cthe damage they have done.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a member of the U.S. military, I saw the consequences of this,\u201d Moore said. \u201cI have never believed they were legitimate negotiating partners.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wearing a Hatzalah lapel pin, Moore stood next to Schneier and spoke candidly about Israel, despite his previous comments about Netanyahu.<\/p>\n

By the time Moore finished speaking, a group of 75 congregants gathered around him in a sun-filled room and fired off questions about his controversial comments and his positioning for the Jewish people, just as they had with Hochul less than 48 hours earlier.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s exactly how Schneier likes it.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere, you can actually press the flesh,\u201d he said. \u201cThey become part of the community.\u201d<\/p>\n
