San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch gave an update on head coach Kyle Shanahan\u2019s condition Saturday morning after news broke that he suffered major injuries in a car crash earlier this month.<\/p>\n

Lynch said in a press conference that Shanahan is suffering \u201clingering effects\u201d from the severe concussion he endured and is being \u201cbasically\u201d treated like he\u2019s in an NFL concussion protocol. The executive noted Shanahan will be out on the field for training camp \u201cto what he can tolerate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cKyle basically is going to be like in the protocol,\u201d he said. \u201cDoc [Anthony Saglimbeni] and all the great doctors we have are giving him great care, and we\u2019re going to let you know [his] condition\u2026 the doctors dictate how he comes back, when he comes back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lynch said assistant head coach Chris Foerster will assume Shanahan\u2019s duties \u201cin concert with our staff,\u201d but will be the \u201cacting\u201d head coach. <\/p>\n

\u201cChris is the acting head coach, but it is going to be very much a collective effort,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Shanahan suffered horrific injuries \u2014 including a severe concussion \u2014 in a car crash near his Northern California home.<\/p>\n

Shanahan\u2019s vehicle collided with an SUV on July 14, leaving the coach with a broken nose, three broken ribs and a broken hand,\u00a0according to ESPN. He also had to get 40 stitches in his face.<\/p>\n

Shanahan was rushed to the hospital for treatment before being released later in the day, according to ESPN\u2019s Adam Schefter. The other driver was uninjured.<\/p>\n

Shanahan has been recovering at home and is believed to be progressing well, though doctors are not expected to clear him for full participation until his concussion symptoms subside. The team has not provided a timetable for his return.<\/p>\n

Police said both drivers cooperated with investigators, and no citations were issued. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of the crash or said whether either driver was at fault.<\/p>\n

\u201cConsistent with our standard release of information procedures in such cases, we do not release information regarding the cause of the collision, or which party may have been at fault,\u201d Palo Alto Lt. Nicholas Martinez said in a statement to ESPN.<\/p>\n

Shanahan is expected to be limited as the team opens training camp on Sunday, according to the team.<\/p>\n

\u201cCoach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers,\u201d the 49ers said in a statement. \u201cCoach Shanahan and the 49ers organization would like to sincerely thank all first responders involved for their efforts and care.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shanahan only informed his fellow coaches of the wreck on Tuesday, ESPN reported.<\/p>\n

Lynch also noted Shanahan\u2019s injuries will not impact the team\u2019s travel plans for their season opener against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia.<\/p>\n
