President Trump played comedian-in-chief Friday night at the rescheduled White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner \u2014 where he had the room roaring as he quipped about a third term, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and roadkill, and trying to pair dress shoes with bulletproof vests in an entertaining and sometimes cutthroat speech.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I said three months ago, the show must go on,\u201d Trump said at the pared-down, more intimate dinner, three months after the initial night of celebration was cut short by the attempted assassination of the president.<\/p>\n

\u201cWon\u2019t soon be forgotten,\u201d the president said of the April dinner, \u201cand I think a lot was learned from that evening.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut just like my presidency, the second time is always better. It\u2019s always better, and the third time will be better yet,\u201d he joked to a chorus of laughter.<\/p>\n

Near the end of his speech, the president even donned a \u201cTrump 2028\u201d hat as he jokingly announced he\u2019d be running for a \u201cfourth term\u201d, calling it a \u201cscoop\u201d for the reporters in the room.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump opened his address by praising the heroics of law enforcement and the Secret Service, and commended administration officials for looking out for the press when shots rang out outside the Washington Hilton ballroom \u2014 before ribbing a Grammy-nominated supporter who was also in the crowd that night.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter hearing the gunshots, many people yelled, \u2018Get down! Get down!\u2019 which caused Nicki Minaj to start twerking,\u201d he quipped. \u201cDo you believe?\u201d<\/p>\n

Later, Trump joked about trying to pair nice dress shoes with a bulletproof vest \u2014 and how he didn\u2019t want to wear the protective gear because it made him look heavier.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone\u2019s looking really good tonight, and I know it was not easy finding shoes to go along with your bulletproof vest, which many people didn\u2019t want to wear because they\u2019d rather die than look 20 pounds heavier,\u201d he jested.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey put one on me. I said, \u2018Are you sure? I\u2019m not wearing this!\u201d<\/p>\n

Striking a more serious tone, he also praised the bravery and strength of the reporters and lawmakers in the room \u2014 and extolled the American spirit.<\/p>\n

\u201cTonight we come back together to answer that heinous attack with unwavering resolve \u2026 to show that in America we do not yield to political violence. We don\u2019t. We can\u2019t do that. Can\u2019t do it. So in this country we live in freedom of speech. We settle our differences not with bullets, but with open and vigorous debate. And no deranged loser with a gun will ever change that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Prior to the president\u2019s remarks, numerous journalism awards and scholarships were handed out.<\/p>\n

When a team of reporters from the Wall Street Journal was honored for a report on Trump\u2019s ties to notorious sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein, the president was seen laughing and throwing his hands up in the air before graciously shaking hands with all the journalists.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has not been an easy evening, all those awards,\u201d Trump responded in his speech, before joking, \u201cDo I have a say?\u201d<\/p>\n

The president, of course, also didn\u2019t pass up the chance to take some jabs at the press and his political foes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis place is really the largest group of Trump derangement syndrome people ever put together at one time,\u201d he cracked.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As the president reminisced about last month\u2019s cage fight outside the Oval Office, he joked, \u201cBefore I came along, if you wanted to see someone lose consciousness on the South Lawn of the White House, all you had to do is ask Joe Biden a question.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump then joked that he\u2019d like to see Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) \u201chave a rematch against an extremely simple question on a foreign policy from the Munich Security Conference,\u201d referring to the \u201cSquad\u201d lawmaker\u2019s embarrassing showing at the high-profile European forum.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Taking aim at musician and rabid Trump hater Bruce Springsteen, Trump asked, \u201cWhat the hell happened to that guy?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHis tour has been renamed \u2018Bored in the USA,\u2019\u201d he wisecracked.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump also zinged potential 2028 White House hopeful Gavin Newsom, a frequent critic of the president.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard Gavin Newscum recently said we will lose our country if we don\u2019t fight fire with fire,\u201d Trump said, before ripping his handling of the devastating California wildfires.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be fair, there\u2019s only one thing we know about Gavin, and that\u2019s that he definitely doesn\u2019t want to fight fire with water.\u201d<\/p>\n

Members of Trump\u2019s own staff and Cabinet weren\u2019t immune, either, as the president shared the love.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump joked that the beef tenderloin dish served to guests is \u201cvery special\u201d because \u201cBobby Kennedy \u2026 personally ran over the cow in his car.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd he cut it up and he brought it here for you to eat tonight,\u201d he continued. \u201cSo it\u2019s very fresh, and Bobby also suggested an appetizer featuring his favorite cut of male raccoon roadkill, but we drew the line at that.\u201d<\/p>\n

A decade ago, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., infamously scooped up a dead bear that had been struck by a car before dumping the carcass in Central Park.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He also joked about how his spunky press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, can be \u201cnasty.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s done a fantastic job. We all love her. She\u2019s done a fantastic job \u2026 She could be nasty, but sometimes she has no choice,\u201d Trump jabbed. \u201cBut Karoline may have one of the hardest jobs in the White House: She has to deal with all of you, all of the time, and you can be very difficult.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019m probably being a little bit oversensitive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s appearance at the annual dinner marks the first time he\u2019s attended as commander-in-chief. The president skipped four straight correspondents\u2019 dinners during his first term, and balked at participating in the first year of his second stint in the White House.<\/p>\n

The dinner was held at the posh Waldorf Astoria in downtown Washington, which was previously the Trump International Hotel, marking the first time in more than five decades that the gathering of press and political figures hasn\u2019t been held at the Washington Hilton.<\/p>\n

Trump had vowed to hold a redo of the April 25 dinner, which was canceled after a deranged gunman ran through a security checkpoint and allegedly shot a Secret Service agent before being taken down just steps away from the Hilton ballroom.<\/p>\n

The alleged gunman, Cole Thomas Allen, has been charged with attempting to assassinate the president and is awaiting trial.<\/p>\n

The shooting prompted organizers and the Secret Service to heighten security for the rescheduled dinner.<\/p>\n

Attendees were subject to three security checkpoints, which included multiple ID checks and Secret Service magnetometers, before entering the Waldorf\u2019s ballroom \u2013 which has less than a quarter of the Washington Hilton\u2019s capacity, making it easier to vet attendees.<\/p>\n

The event did not feature the sprawling cocktail receptions that previous dinners have had.<\/p>\n

Traditional printed passes were also replaced with digital ones and an outside security firm was brought in to screen guests as well.<\/p>\n

Unlike April\u2019s dinner, Vice President JD Vance and first lady Melania Trump did not attend.<\/p>\n

Notable Trump administration officials in attendance included War Secretary Pete Hegseth, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, United Nations Ambassador Mike Waltz and White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.<\/p>\n

Mentalist Oz Pearlman, who was in the middle of a trick when shots were fired outside the ballroom in April, returned Friday night and was once again at the head table with the president.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s try this again,\u201d Weijia Jiang, who was serving as president of the White House Correspondents\u2019 Association at the time of the shooting, said in her opening remarks.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany of you were also with us in April,\u201d she continued. \u201cYou came as guests, but within moments, you went to work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jiang, a reporter with CBS News, decried the assassination attempt as \u201can attack on democracy itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTonight, our message is this: We are back. We will not be intimidated. We refuse to let an act of violence have the final word,\u201d she declared.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the dinner, Leavitt teased that Trump\u2019s speech would be \u201ca combination of unifying yet vicious, and serious yet hilarious, all at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing I can assure you,\u201d Leavitt told reporters, \u201cit will be entertaining.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump spoke for over an hour and thanked the reporters at the end for helping him make the US \u201cthe hottest country anywhere in the world.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all did that together. It\u2019s not me. We all did it together \u2014 and we do, we have the hottest country anywhere in the world, and we\u2019re going to keep it going,\u201d Trump gushed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I just want to say, I have tremendous respect for the people in this room\u2026 and I have a lot of respect for your profession,\u201d he added. \u201cYour profession\u2019s amazing, and I just want to thank you for having me, and it\u2019s been fun, and I\u2019ve met a lot of great people.\u201d<\/p>\n
