Country singer Aaron Lee Tasjan claimed several fans walked out of his concert after he performed his politically charged song \u201cI Love America Better Than You\u201d \u2014 prompting him to warn of the country\u2019s \u201cdescent into fracture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tasjan estimated that eight concertgoers got up and left during his show at 1859 St. Joseph\u2019s Church in Galveston, Texas, because they were \u201cvery clearly put off by the messages\u201d in the lyrics, the 39-year-old wrote on Facebook after the incident.<\/p>\n

The song references a range of political and cultural issues, with a reference to President Barack Obama, the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, immigration and transgender rights.<\/p>\n

Tasjan sings, \u201cI love America better than you \/ Her founding mothers and her hotdogs too \/ First Black president \/ Insurrectionists \/ I love America better than you,\u201d before ending with, \u201cI love America better than you \/ Her crowded cities and her hotdogs too \/ Land of immigrants \/ Queer Trans feminists \/ I love America better than you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Nashville-based musician addressed the walkout in his Facebook post two days later.<\/p>\n

\u201cTowards the end of \u2018I Love America Better Than You\u2019 during my show, 8 people who were very clearly put off by the messages in the song got up and walked out of my show,\u201d Tasjan wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor artists, I think it\u2019s very important to remember that our job is not simply to sell tickets and t-shirts and receive applause. To me, the main part of what we do is to create works that affect the listener.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tasjan said he respected the concertgoers\u2019 decision to walk out but argued that music should challenge listeners rather than simply entertain them.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, I believe in the medicinal properties of songs,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI think songs can serve the function of healing, reminding, and comforting, but most importantly, telling the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tasjan went on to explain the meaning behind \u201cI Love America Better Than You,\u201d which he released in 2024 as part of his \u201cStellar Evolution\u201d album.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my song, I sing about all of us. It\u2019s not criticism but illumination. It doesn\u2019t point fingers, it states plainly what it is and leaves room for questions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I appreciate all 8 of the folks who walked out of my concert for exercising their free will, and at the same time, I invite all of us to continue to reflect on our own values as the values of the individual paint a picture of the values of our country,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

Tasjan ended his post by warning that avoiding uncomfortable conversations will deepen the country\u2019s divisions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe time to remain comfortable is gone. If we choose only to walk away from that which makes us uncomfortable, we subject ourselves to an embittered stagnation or worse, a descent into fracture,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

Tasjan, who blends country, Americana and indie rock, has released six studio albums and earned a 2022 Grammy nomination for Best American Roots Song for \u201cDiamond Studded Shoes.\u201d<\/p>\n

His comments come as musicians continue to face backlash over bringing politics into their performances.<\/p>\n

Bruce Springsteen has repeatedly criticized President Trump during his \u201cLand of Hope and Dreams\u201d tour this year, prompting Trump to call Springsteen a \u201cdried up prune.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger recently suggested audiences don\u2019t come to concerts to hear political speeches.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t want to lecture them,\u201d Jagger said when asked about Springsteen\u2019s onstage remarks, saying his job is to give fans \u201cthe best time they possibly can.\u201d<\/p>\n
