Nolan Wells\u2019 official autopsy results will remain sealed until after a grand jury reviews evidence into the Mississippi teen\u2019s mysterious disappearance and death.<\/p>\n

Jackson County District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath made the announcement on Thursday \u2014 a day after Wells\u2019 family released an independent autopsy that left unanswered questions about how the 18-year-old turned up dead following a July 4 trip with friends to Horn Island.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery death in the county, except those of natural causes and non-criminal car wrecks, are presented to your grand jury. Many people don\u2019t know that,\u201d McIlrath said in a video statement. <\/p>\n

\u201cNolan\u2019s case is being handled the same way, with the same care, and the same commitment to the truth that we handle all death investigations.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand the public\u2019s urgency to know what happened to Nolan, but we are not taking time for time\u2019s sake. We are taking the time required to complete the work this investigation demands,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

The Jackson County DA doubled down on the efforts by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies investigating Wells\u2019 death amid criticism on how the case has been handled \u2014 including scathing accusations by NAACP President Derrick Johnson that local and state Mississippi officials have been \u201cderelict in their duties\u201d throughout the investigation.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery piece of evidence must be examined. Every credible lead must be followed to its conclusion. Every witness interview must be analyzed in context of all other evidence,\u201d McIlrath said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe pressure for answers does not change what the work requires,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

McIlrath said that the \u201crules of professional conduct restrict the information\u201d that a prosecutor can reveal during an investigation, but emphasized that their \u201cresponsibility to Nolan and our community is to complete this investigation thoroughly, carefully, without compromise, supported by the evidence, and worthy of the confidence of the people we serve.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur restraint in communicating facts and evidence is not an effort to keep the truth from the public. It is an effort to protect the integrity of this investigation and the grand jury proceeding,\u201d McIlrath added.<\/p>\n

The district attorney acknowledged that while discussion around Wells\u2019 death has become \u201cdivided,\u201d she knows everyone wants \u201cthe same thing, to understand what happened to Nolan.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we sacrifice the integrity of the process in effort to satisfy today\u2019s questions, we risk undermining the confidence in tomorrow\u2019s answers,\u201d McIlrath said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain, our restraint in sharing details of the investigation is not a refusal to share the truth,\u201d she doubled down.\u00a0<\/p>\n

McIlrath\u2019s announcement came a day after independent autopsy results for Wells. <\/p>\n

Wells\u2019 parents flew their son\u2019s body over 800 miles from their home state of Mississippi to Washington, DC, for an independent autopsy following claims that the circumstances around his death don\u2019t \u201cadd up.\u201d<\/p>\n

The college football star\u2019s throat was missing following the official post-mortem conducted by the Mississippi State Medical Examiner\u2019s Office, according to Dr. Roger Mitchell, the former chief medical examiner for Washington, DC,\u00a0 who led the second autopsy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But that is not necessarily unusual as \u201cit is assumed that the initial pathologist retained these structures for additional evaluation,\u201d Mitchell said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As a result, in part, Mitchell said that his ruling on the cause and manner of Wells\u2019 death is \u201cundetermined pending investigation\u201d \u2014 including the release of toxicology results.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Other key factors impacting the ruling include challenges due to decomposition and uncertainty over the cause of a 12-inch \u201cdiscoloration\u201d to the 18-year-old\u2019s head.<\/p>\n

A former top medical examiner told The Post that the independent autopsy report does not indicate that foul play was involved in Wells\u2019 mysterious death.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think just to be clear that so far there\u2019s nothing dependent on foul play, but we don\u2019t know what their findings were,\u201d Dr. Michael Baden told The Post after reviewing Wells\u2019 preliminary independent autopsy results.<\/p>\n
