WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump is demanding \u201ca head for an eye\u201d when it comes to attacking Iran, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters Thursday, updating the Old Testament formula of reciprocal justice. <\/p>\n

\u201cI saw [Abbas] Araghchi, their foreign minister, who the other day said something about their policies, \u2018an eye for an eye.\u2019 The president\u2019s policy is a head for an eye,\u201d Rubio said following the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meeting of foreign ministers in the Philippines.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, honestly, that\u2019s what it\u2019s going to be. I mean, they will pay a very heavy price,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re going to continue to pay a very heavy price. Their industrial base has been decimated. Their defense industrial base has been decimated to losing launchers, losing radars every single night.\u201d<\/p>\n

The phrase \u201ceye for an eye\u201d stems from several ancient legal codes, but is most famously found in the Book of Leviticus, which states: \u201cIf\u00a0anyone injures his neighbor,\u00a0as he has done it shall be done to him,fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rubio\u2019s comments follow the breakdown of last month\u2019s tentative peace deal with Iran.<\/p>\n

Trump wrote Wednesday on Truth Social, ahead of greeting the returning remains of four US soldiers, that he would strike Iranian infrastructure if there are additional attacks on commercial ships.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom this point forward, any time the Islamic Republic of Iran shoots at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, whether it be by Missile, Rocket, Drone, or any other device or weapon, the United States will bomb and destroy ONE BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT, including those located next to, or in, the Capital City of Tehran,\u201d Trump wrote.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, the war broadened to include the Bab al-Mandab Strait as the Iran-backed Houthi movement, which controls northern Yemen, attacked two Saudi oil tankers.<\/p>\n

In response, Trump warned Thursday that \u201cthe U.S. will hold Iran responsible, in that the Houthis are a Surrogate and\/or Proxy of Iran, and major military punishment will be inflicted upon Iran and, of course, the Houthis, themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n
