WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump vowed Thursday to hold Iran accountable for any attacks by Yemen\u2019s Houthis on commercial shipping in the Red Sea\u00a0hours\u00a0after the Tehran-backed rebels hit two Saudi Arabian ships.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease let this TRUTH serve to represent that if they do this again, the U.S. will hold Iran responsible, in that the Houthis are a Surrogate and\/or Proxy of Iran, and major military punishment will be inflicted upon Iran and, of course, the Houthis, themselves, who I am very disappointed with,\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social, noting that the Houthis\u00a0\u201chave, until now, acted very professionally and smart\u201d during Operation Epic Fury, which began Feb. 28.<\/p>\n

Wednesday\u2019s attack raised fears that the Houthis could attempt to shut down the\u00a0Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, a key oil transit point, and further rattle global markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bab-el-Mandeb, which connects the\u00a0Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean beyond, sees an estimated\u00a06.2 million barrels of oil \u2014\u00a0roughly 5% of the world\u2019s supply \u2014 pass through it annually.<\/p>\n

In the spring of last year, the US carried out a series of airstrikes targeting the Houthis\u2019 infrastructure and ability to cause mayhem in global shipping lanes.<\/p>\n

\u201cA year ago the United States of America attacked, very powerfully, the Houthis, for\u00a0their interference with commerce and trade,\u00a0by shooting at ships. Since that time, and during our conflict with Iran, they\u00a0have\u00a0acted very responsibly,\u201d Trump recounted in his Thursday Truth Social post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

During the conflict, Tehran has moved to tighten its control over shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly a fifth of the world\u2019s seaborne oil supplies once flowed annually.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump has ordered a series of attacks against Iran meant to loosen the regime\u2019s grip on the waterway, with limited success.\u00a0<\/p>\n
