Harvard has named the wife of controversial New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof to one of the university\u2019s top leadership posts \u2014 sparking backlash from pro-Israel critics who accused both the Ivy League school and the Gray Lady of amplifying anti-Israel narratives amid the ongoing war in Gaza.<\/p>\n

Sheryl WuDunn, a journo who jointly won a Pulitzer with hubby Kristoff, was named last week as vice chair of the executive committee of Harvard\u2019s Board of Overseers, the university\u2019s second-highest governing body, according to the Harvard Crimson.<\/p>\n

The appointment triggered online backlash from supporters of Israel still furious over Kristof\u2019s explosive May 11 op-ed that alleged widespread Israeli abuse of Palestinian detainees, a piece experts blasted as distorted.<\/p>\n

WuDunn\u2019s elevation at Harvard quickly became swept up in that controversy.<\/p>\n

\u201cHarvard\u2019s antisemitism problem isn\u2019t getting better. It\u2019s getting promoted into leadership,\u201d media personality Samantha Ettus wrote in a viral X post criticizing the appointment.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is married to blood libelist Nicholas Kristof,\u201d Ettus added.<\/p>\n

Another X user wrote that \u201cHarvard has learned nothing,\u201d while others called on lawmakers to \u201cdefund Harvard\u201d over what they described as the school\u2019s handling of antisemitism concerns.<\/p>\n

One commenter questioned \u201cwhat experience\u201d WuDunn brought to the role \u201cbesides being \u2018Half of Nick Kristof\u2019s Sky,’\u201d sarcastically referring to the couple\u2019s bestselling book \u201cHalf the Sky.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked for comment, the Times pointed to a previous statement it issued in defense of Kristof\u2019s column.<\/p>\n

The Post has sought comment from WuDunn, Kristof and Harvard.<\/p>\n

Kristof\u2019s column published earlier this month alleged that Palestinian men, women and children had suffered widespread sexual abuse at the hands of Israeli prison guards.<\/p>\n

The scribe also cited allegations that guards beat detainees\u2019 genitals, threatened prisoners and their family members with rape and used dogs in acts of sexual abuse against prisoners.<\/p>\n

The Israeli prison service told the Times it \u201ccategorically rejects the allegations\u201d of sexual abuse, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced accusations of sexual violence against Israel as \u201cbaseless.\u201d <\/p>\n

The column triggered furious condemnation from Israeli officials and pro-Israel commentators, with Netanyahu threatening legal action against the Times and accusing the paper of promoting a modern-day \u201cblood libel.\u201d<\/p>\n

WuDunn defended her husband amid the furor, writing in a post on X that \u201crigorous reporting \u2014 especially when it is careful, meticulous, and courageous \u2014 often draws personal attacks from those uncomfortable with the facts.\u201d<\/p>\n

The appointment came in the wake of accusations Harvard failed to crack down on antisemitism following Hamas\u2019 Oct. 7, 2023 terror attack and the ensuing war in Gaza \u2014 a controversy that fueled congressional investigations, donor revolts and leadership turmoil at the university.<\/p>\n

WuDunn and Kristof have long been one of journalism\u2019s highest-profile power couples.<\/p>\n

The duo shared the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting for coverage of China\u2019s pro-democracy movement and the Tiananmen Square crackdown, becoming the first married couple to jointly win the highest honor in journalism.<\/p>\n

WuDunn later worked as a New York Times executive, investment banker at Goldman Sachs and business consultant.<\/p>\n
