Argentina nearly landed as many punches as shots on goal in the World Cup final Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>

Before Spain could celebrate its 1-0 win over Argentina to capture its first World Cup title since 2010, it had to fight off an enraged Leandro Paredes on the pitch at MetLife Stadium.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Argentine player punched Spain defender Eric Garc\u00eda after the final whistle kicking off a brief brawl.<\/p>\n

The wild moment happened when Paredes charged toward Garc\u00eda and forced him hard to the ground by striking him with his open hand toward his throat.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He also shoved Spain midfielder Gavi after as the larger brawl broke out.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Eventually, things got under control as cooler heads prevailed, and Spain was able to celebrate its World Cup title.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Paredes was given a red card, having started the whole incident right in front of assistant referee Toma\u017e Klan\u010dnik and an Argentina coach.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe went for them. There is no place or space for that,\u201d Shearer continued. \u201cWe know how much it means to them and we know how much it hurts to lose, but there is a way to lose. Too many times we have seen that from Argentina.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reaction after the final whistle is terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n

The whole incident is likely to grab the attention of FIFA\u2019s disciplinary committee and could cost Paredes a longer suspension than just the mandatory one game ban.\u00a0<\/p>\n
