The New York City Democratic Socialists of America lefty co-chair ripped into Big Apple landlords during an interview \u2014 but was swiftly shut down by a quick-thinking Fox News host.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America NYC chapter Gustavo Gordillo appeared on Fox News\u2019 \u2018The Story\u2019 hosted by Martha MacCallum on Friday and harshly criticized New York landlords and how much they make.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem we\u2019re facing in our housing system is that we talk about tenants and we say, they have to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, they have to be responsible financially,\u201d Gordillo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut when we look at the landlords, we don\u2019t use those same standards,\u201d he argued.<\/p>\n

\u201cLandlords in New York have been making a 12 percent return on their investment, on average,\u201d Gordillo continued before being questioned by MacCallum as to how much he thought landlords should be making.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s fair for the landlord to make if you don\u2019t like 12 [percent],\u201d MacCallum asked.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The lefty co-chair says that landlords are \u201ccomplaining\u201d that a 12 percent on their investment is not enough and that they \u201cdon\u2019t think anyone should have a constitutional right to double-digit returns on their investment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The quick-thinking presenter then asks \u201cno one should have a right to a double digit return on their investment?\u201d to which Gordillo responds with \u201cno one has a right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are you talking about,\u201d a dumbfounded MacCallum asks.<\/p>\n

Gordillo says \u201cthat\u2019s not in the constitution but what we see if when we implement a rent freeze we have landlords who are crying that the government is going to put them out of business,\u201d before being shut down by the Fox presenter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, they\u2019re trying to run a business and they\u2019re trying to do it effectively,\u201d McCallum says. \u201cAre all landlords perfect? Are some landlords lousy? Of course they are.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I just think that the idea that no one should make a double digit profit is the antithesis of the desire to like \u2018you can be anything you want to be in New York,;\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Last month, the city\u2019s Rent Guidelines board made good on Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s key campaign promise to \u201cfreeze the rent\u201d for roughly 1 million rent-stabilized units \u2014 much to the dismay of many landlords who are already feeling the heat of struggling to break-even on their investments.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cExpense items are not proportional to the income the properties generate,\u201d landlord Lav Bauta told The Post, whose firm Zion Equities owns about 800 New York City rent-stabilized units and manages 4,000 apartments.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cRent-stabilized properties incur the same, or greater, expenses as their fair-market counterparts: insurance, wages, supplies, elevator service, utilities, etc. There is no support or control mechanism to cap expenses while incomes have been capped.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can see how this is clearly unsustainable, and we are not even making considerations for debt service which was foundational for providing the capital needed to perform ongoing repairs and reinvestment at the varying sites,\u201d Bauta added.<\/p>\n
