SOUTHPORT, England \u2014 There was still a buzz around Royal Birkdale on Saturday about the Bryson DeChambeau saga that played out late into the night Friday.<\/p>\n

As tournament officials were sorting out the two-shot penalty assessed to DeChambeau for improving the lie of his ball, swing path and stance on the fifth hole of Friday\u2019s second round, the release of Saturday\u2019s tee times was delayed late into the evening, leaving players to wonder what was going on.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have social media, so I was wondering why our tee times weren\u2019t coming out at about 10:50 p.m. last night,\u2019\u2019 Xander Schauffele said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m assuming that (the DeChambeau kerfuffle) had something to do with it.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

It did.<\/p>\n

Schauffele and other players had mixed thoughts about whether DeChambeau should have been penalized the two shots.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a tough one,\u2019\u2019 Schauffele said. \u201cI haven\u2019t spoken to him or heard what he said, but he\u2019s just stepping in how you\u2019d normally step in to hit a golf shot. I think the R&A (governing body) said something along the lines of whether it\u2019s intentional or not, it\u2019s still a penalty.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a tough spot to be, obviously, when you\u2019re in high brush, kind of having to dance around to get to your golf ball is a tricky thing,\u2019\u2019 Schauffele went on. \u201cIt\u2019s not something we\u2019re used to doing that often. You imagine you give him the benefit of the doubt. He said he didn\u2019t do it intentionally, and it\u2019s unfortunate that he got penalized because he was playing incredibly well and obviously he\u2019s still playing incredibly well.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, he\u2019s obviously going to have something to prove these next two days.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Russell Henley said he saw the video of DeChambeau appearing to stamp down the high grass.<\/p>\n

\u201cClearly [the R&A] are [saying] he improved [the path of] his backswing,\u2019\u2019 Henley said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know what it looked like before he came back over there or if the bush came back up after he stepped on it. But yeah, that\u2019s a tough one for him.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

DeChambeau was about to sign for a 4-under-par 66 that moved him to 7-under for the tournament and into second place.<\/p>\n

The penalty dropped him to 5-under par and in a tie for fifth as he began his third round Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery shot is so important,\u2019\u2019 Henley said. \u201cIt\u2019s tough in the moment to take it. It\u2019s unfortunate, but I think everybody should be held accountable for the same rules.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Henley added, \u201cThe issue with that to me is the fact that he\u2019s on TV every shot. If I played that hole yesterday, you might not have seen (if) I did the same thing, [and] maybe they don\u2019t penalize me because maybe they don\u2019t see me do it.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Max Homa, after his round Saturday, said he \u201cdid not agree with the ruling.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve known Bryson for a very long time, and he\u2019s an interesting human at times, but I know he would never cheat the game of golf,\u2019\u2019 Homa said. \u201cI don\u2019t really love how it happened. It\u2019s not that the R&A said that he did it intentionally, but that rule as a professional golfer feels like it\u2019s written inherently to protect against people trying to improve their lie.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI just hope that people don\u2019t create a narrative [of him cheating] because I don\u2019t believe that of him. I just don\u2019t think that\u2019s in his character, so it\u2019s a shame I think that\u2019s kind of how it\u2019s being portrayed to some.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Homa said DeChambeau was \u201cright to be frustrated\u2019\u2019 at the ruling, which was displayed on camera as he had an animated discussion with R&A rules officials.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was one back and now he\u2019s three,\u2019\u2019 Homa said. \u201cI agree with him for being frustrated, especially I\u2019m assuming that was not his intent. I understood the demonstrative nature and actions because it probably just feels a bit like an indictment.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the rules are complicated. It\u2019s crazy. We\u2019re hoping they made the right one. I\u2019m sure he\u2019ll use it in the right way and put a chip on his shoulder.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
