The implosion of the Platner campaign in Maine went \u201cabout as horribly as it possibly could have,\u201d and now attention turns Michigan, where Abdul El-Sayed\u2019s run for US senate is \u201creally thrilling DSA hearts,\u201d\u00a0snarks National Review\u2019s Jim Geraghty. El-Sayed accuses reporters of \u201cfixating\u201d on his calls to \u201cdefund the police\u201d instead of how Medicare for All is the \u201ccenterpiece of his domestic agenda.\u201d Hah! Though Medicare for All \u201cis the topic he has spent his life\u2019s work on and presumably knows more about than any other issue,\u201d El-Sayed refuses to \u201cever give a price tag on what his plan would cost.\u201d He also routinely blames AIPAC for everything, including \u201cartificial intelligence, the national debt, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: Maine Dems Distrust Their Voters<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cUnder wildly different circumstances, Democrats in Maine and Republicans in South Carolina face the problem of finding a new nominee to run for the Senate this November,\u201d reports the Washington Examiner\u2019s Byron York. To replace Graham Platner, Maine Democrats will convene 601 insiders \u201cto select the new Democratic nominee\u201d in \u201ca pretty insular affair.\u201d Meanwhile, South Carolina Republicans \u201care planning a special primary after the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham\u201d; the only controversy is over whether to \u201cexclude those who have already voted in the Democratic primary\u201d on June 9. South Carolina\u2019s \u201cRepublican nominee will be chosen by voters\u201d; Maine\u2019s \u201cDemocratic nominee will be chosen by a few hundred party officials and activists.\u201d So: \u201cWhich is the party of democracy?\u201d<\/p>\n

Music beat: Stop the EU\u2019s Royalties Grab<\/strong><\/p>\n

The European Union is ready to take nearly $300 million from American artists, and \u201cCongress is the only body on earth that can stop it,\u201d warns Gene Simmons at The Wall Street Journal. Because US broadcast stations don\u2019t pay performers and labels for recordings played on the radio, making billions off of uncompensated artists, the European Commission is looking to end such royalty payments in the EU. Instead, the bipartisan American Music Fairness Act would ensure that Big Radio pays \u201cperformance royalties while also protecting small local broadcasters\u201d \u2014 and also make \u201cEurope\u2019s proposal null and void.\u201d But the House and Senate Judiciary committees have yet to send it to the floor. With Europe \u201cthreatening to take away money that artists have earned, it\u2019s time for Congress to stand up on behalf of American artists.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Energy desk: Hochul Bans \u2018the Future\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

New York \u201cjust became the first state\u201d to \u201cban the future,\u201d thanks to Gov. Hochul\u2019s one-year data-center moratorium,\u00a0sighs Josh Wolfe at The Free Press, simply because the \u201cpolitical winds\u201d shifted and she\u2019s facing reelection. Yet \u201cevery durable gain in living standards\u201d has come from \u201ctechnological advances,\u201d \u201cAI is the next chapter\u201d \u2014 and data centers are essential. Hochul\u2019s ban is \u201cworse than a mistake,\u201d because \u201cif you want the little guy to compete with the giants, you don\u2019t ration electricity\u201d; you \u201cflood the zone with it.\u201d These centers also create enormous demand for electricians and plumbers, driving \u201cwages skyward.\u201d Yes, electricity prices have risen, but the answer is \u201cnot less demand but more supply.\u201d Instead, we get \u201celections over electricity and vibes over volts.\u201d<\/p>\n
