WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump declared Monday that the US will be \u201ctaking over\u201d the Strait of Hormuz following another round of airstrikes against Iran overnight.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re taking over the strait. They have nothing. They\u2019ve got nothing,\u201d Trump, 80, told \u201cFox & Friends\u201d when asked about Iran\u2019s claims to have closed the critical waterway.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we\u2019re just going to hit them very hard, and we\u2019re going to, we\u2019re going to keep the strait, and we\u2019ll probably run it,\u201d the president later added. \u201cWe\u2019ll become the guardian of the strait. Maybe we\u2019ll call it the guardian angel of the strait, and we should be reimbursed for that \u2026 We guarded it for nothing, and now we\u2019re going to guard it \u2014 we\u2019re going to get paid for guarding it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before the beginning of Operation Epic Fury, Feb. 28, nearly a fifth of the world\u2019s seaborne oil flowed through the Strait of Hormuz annually.<\/p>\n

The White House had brokered an extended cease-fire with Iran in early April, followed last month by a preliminary peace deal known as a memorandum of understanding, but the pact has fallen apart amid contention over the status of the strait\u00a0and its impact on the global economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Iran has described the strait as being closed, while insisting it alone must control the waterway and potentially charge vessels for traveling through it. The US military and Trump, by contrast, have asserted that the strait remains open.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a deal. It was a done deal, and then they broke it,\u201d Trump said Monday. \u201cThey always break it.\u00a0We\u2019ve\u00a0had 10 deals with these people, and so we\u2019re just going to hit them very hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

US forces struck approximately 140 targets Sunday night, according to the military\u2019s Central Command,\u00a0including missile and drone launch sites, ammunition dumps, communication equipment, and other areas \u2014 a far heavier set of attacks than in two previous rounds of strikes in the last week.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have them on\u00a0the run. Most of their equipment is gone. Their anti-aircraft\u00a0stuff\u00a0is gone. We hit them very hard last night. Every time they send a drone, we hit them very hard,\u201d Trump said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Iran retaliated by launching projectiles at\u00a0Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, and even Oman \u2014\u00a0whose territorial waters with Iran make up the strait. There was no immediate word of damage or casualties from the US partners.<\/p>\n

Tehran state media acknowledged the latest attacks on its soil early Monday, describing explosions in several locations with at least one person being killed.<\/p>\n

Sunday night\u2019s US strikes followed\u00a0an Iranian attack on a container ship, the latest in a series of back-and-forths between the two sides that led Trump to declare the cease-fire \u201cover\u201d last week \u2014 though efforts by mediators from Egypt, Pakistan, and Qatar to reach a final deal continue.<\/p>\n
