Sam Neill, the star of the 1993 blockbuster \u201cJurassic Park,\u201d died at 78 on Monday, his family announced.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with immense sadness that the wh\u0101nau [family] of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney Australia,\u201d the late actor\u2019s loved ones wrote via Instagram.<\/p>\n

\u201cSam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterized his whole life,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cThe loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neill\u2019s family went on to \u201cexpress their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent\u2019s Private Hospital for their incredible care.\u201d<\/p>\n

They concluded, \u201cMore details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neill\u2019s death comes just two months after he announced he was cancer-free following his battle with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma \u2013 a rare and aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been living with a particular type of lymphoma for about five years and I was on chemotherapy and the pretty miserable business but it was keeping me alive,\u201d he told Australia\u2019s 7News in April.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Neill, who was born in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland in 1947, was forced to seek an alternative when doctors told him chemotherapy stopped working.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was at a loss and it looked like I was on the way out, which wasn\u2019t ideal obviously,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He then took part in a trial for CAR T-cell therapy \u2013 a form of immunotherapy that trains T-cells to destroy cancer cells.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve just had a scan just now and there is no cancer in my body, that\u2019s an extraordinary thing,\u201d he said, reflecting on the success of his trial.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m very, very excited that this can happen. It\u2019s time I did another movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neill previously said he was \u201cnot remotely afraid\u201d of dying as he battled cancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know I\u2019ve got it, but I\u2019m not really interested in it,\u201d he said in 2023.<\/p>\n

Neill, who moved to New Zealand in 1954, was best known for playing the paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in \u201cJurassic Park,\u201d a role he would reprise in \u201cJurassic Park III\u201d in 2001, and \u201cJurassic World: Dominion\u201d in 2022.<\/p>\n

Neill\u2019s first acting credit was for the 1971 TV movie \u201cThe City of No,\u201d but his role as Smith in the Roger Donaldson directed 1977 film \u201cSleeping Dogs\u201d was considered a major moment for his acting career.<\/p>\n

\u201cSleeping Dogs\u201d was the first Kiwi-produced film to be released in theaters across the US.<\/p>\n

Neill appeared in the Australian drama \u201cThe Sullivans,\u201d where he played Ben Dawson, appearing in 40 episodes between 1979 and 1980.<\/p>\n

During the 1980s, he went on to appear in series such as \u201cReilly: Ace of Spies\u201d and \u201cAmerika,\u201d as well as movies including \u201cEnigma,\u201d and \u201cDead Calm.\u201d <\/p>\n

Neill appeared alongside Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane in the 1989 psychological thriller, directed by Phillip Noyce.<\/p>\n

He starred in John Carpenter\u2019s \u201cMemoirs of an Invisible Man,\u201d playing shady CIA operative David Jenkins \u2013 a role that earned him a Saturn Award nomination in 1993 from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films.<\/p>\n

Neill also starred in the BAFTA-winning series \u201cPeaky Blinders,\u201d playing Inspector Chester Campbell in 12 episodes between 2013 and 2014.\u00a0<\/p>\n

More recently, Neill appeared in miniseries such as \u201cApples Never Fall,\u201d \u201cUntamed\u201d and \u201cThe Twelve.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He has acting credits for the upcoming 2027 movie \u201cGodzilla X Kong: Supernova\u201d but his character remains under wraps. <\/p>\n

During his career, which spanned more than five decades, he amassed more than 150 acting credits. <\/p>\n

Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Neill will be \u201cmourned and long remembered,\u201d writing via X, \u201cSam Neill starred in so many beloved Australian stories and he earned a special place in Australian hearts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWry and dry, thoughtful and laconic, Sam fought illness with the same dignity, humor and conviction that gave strength to his every performance,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n
