ANKARA, Turkey \u2014 President Trump said Wednesday that he believes his memorandum of understanding with Iran is dead after he ordered overnight airstrikes on 80 targets in response to Iranian attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t like them at all. And frankly, I think we wasted a lot of time with them, I think we should just do our business,\u201d Trump said in his first public remarks after ordering the airstrikes.<\/p>\n

When asked by a reporter if the preliminary peace deal, which Trump signed at the Palace of Versailles in France June 17, was dead, the president replied: \u201cTo me, I think it\u2019s over. I don\u2019t want to deal with them anymore. They\u2019re scum.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re vicious, violent people\u2026 so far as I\u2019m concerned, it\u2019s over,\u201d Trump added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSo far as I\u2019m concerned, it\u2019s just a waste of time dealing with them. They\u2019re liars\u2026 They\u2019re liars, they\u2019re cheats, they\u2019re sick people.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrankly, I don\u2019t want to waste my time with them,\u201d the president went on. \u201cNow I\u2019ll let our wonderful negotiators keep talking if they want, but I don\u2019t see it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s lead negotiator, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, defiantly said in a morning statement that \u201cthe era of bullying and extortion is over. It leads nowhere. We don\u2019t fold.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 14-point memorandum of understanding called for a 60-day window to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as the two sides negotiated the final status of Iran\u2019s nuclear program, the destruction of which was Trump\u2019s core war aim, along with potential sanctions relief and unfreezing of Iran assets.<\/p>\n

Iran attacked three commercial ships in the strait on Monday and Tuesday after insisting that all vessels use a Tehran-approved sea route, rather than a different route along the Omani coast preferred by the US and its allies.<\/p>\n

Although there have been similar flare-ups over the status of the strait since the memorandum was signed, Trump\u2019s response Wednesday was more emphatic and turned personal when he noted past Iranian plots to assassinate him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey want to take out the US leader, me. I\u2019m on every list,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI saw a thing this morning, I\u2019m on every single one of their lists. And so far, I guess I\u2019ve been a little bit lucky. But that maybe doesn\u2019t last very long.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump added, \u201cThese are evil, sick people and we have to rid their cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran has sought to assert new control, including imposing shipping fees, over the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of oil exports transit each year.<\/p>\n
