Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards said they targeted US military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait on Wednesday after the US launched a wave of military strikes on\u00a0Iran\u00a0in response to attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

In the latest blow to the fragile cease-fire agreement, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it carried out a joint missile and drone operation against key US military sites in Bandar Salman, Bahrain\u2019s Fifth Naval District and Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, and shot down a US MQ9 drone attempting to interfere in the operation.<\/p>\n

Air raid sirens sounded in Bahrain and Kuwait, officials said. The Kuwaiti army said air defenses were confronting \u201chostile\u201d missile and drone attacks.<\/p>\n

The US earlier unleashed fresh military strikes and revoked a license allowing\u00a0Iran\u00a0to sell oil in response to attacks on three tankers in the strait.<\/p>\n

The US Central Command said more than 60 small boats of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were among the\u00a0targets\u00a0hit, in a bid to impose a heavy cost on\u00a0Iran\u00a0for strikes on shipping in violation of the cease-fire.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe unwarranted aggression by\u00a0Iranian forces is a clear and dangerous violation of the cease-fire and undermines freedom of navigation,\u201d CENTCOM said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s top joint military command, Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, condemned the US strikes as a \u201cblatant act of aggression,\u201d threatened a \u201ccrushing response,\u201d and warned that Tehran would not allow US interference in the management of the strait.<\/p>\n

A top\u00a0Iranian negotiator, parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, accused the US of\u00a0breaching\u00a0the cease-fire agreement.<\/p>\n

He cited not only the latest US military strikes, but renewed oil sanctions, violations of\u00a0Iranian \u201cadjustments\u201d in the Strait of Hormuz, and Israeli attacks against Lebanon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe era of bullying and extortion is over,\u201d Qalibaf said in a post on X. \u201cWe don\u2019t fold.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iranian media earlier reported explosions in\u00a0Iran\u2019s main oil hub of Kharg Island, on Qeshm Island and in the southern port cities of Sirik and Bandar Abbas.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s Press TV reported several blasts were heard in southern Kharg Island.\u00a0CENTCOM made no mention of Kharg Island, from which\u00a0Iran\u00a0exports 90% of its crude oil.<\/p>\n

A US official told Reuters that strikes targeted\u00a0Iranian air defense systems, coastal surveillance systems, surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship cruise missiles and drone launch sites.<\/p>\n

No civilian deaths were reported in\u00a0Iran, but several people were injured by shrapnel from an \u201cenemy projectile\u201d that hit a commercial pier in Sirik, according to an\u00a0Iranian state TV reporter.<\/p>\n

The reports said strikes also hit fishing piers in Sirik and in Bandar Abbas.<\/p>\n

The incidents were the latest threat to the fragile cease-fire agreement the US and\u00a0Iran\u00a0struck last month, pausing the conflict that started with US and Israeli strikes across the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n

OIL PRICES RISE<\/h2>\n

In a potentially major blow to that agreement, Washington moved on Tuesday to withdraw a key concession that had allowed\u00a0Iran\u00a0to sell oil on international markets.<\/p>\n

Oil prices rose more than 3% after the US announced the move.<\/p>\n

A US official said earlier that negotiators continued to work in good faith toward a final agreement with\u00a0Iran.<\/p>\n

But control of the strait has given Tehran immense leverage, effectively allowing it to force a stalemate with the world\u2019s most powerful military.<\/p>\n

Analysts say Tehran uses attacks on ships to underscore that leverage as it negotiates a long-term peace deal with the US.<\/p>\n

Under the interim US-Iran\u00a0agreement, the US Treasury issued a\u00a0June 22 general license\u00a0to allow the sale of crude oil and petrochemical and petroleum products of\u00a0Iranian origin through August 21.<\/p>\n

In revoking that license on Tuesday, it gave\u00a0Iran\u00a0until July 17 to wind down any transactions.<\/p>\n

ANY MEASURE NECESSARY<\/h2>\n

Iran\u2019s foreign ministry condemned the move as a breach of the framework agreement to end the war and said Washington would bear responsibility for the consequences.<\/p>\n

The ministry said early on Wednesday that\u00a0Iran\u00a0would take any measure it deemed necessary to safeguard its interests and national security.<\/p>\n

While Tehran denied responsibility for the latest strikes on ships in the strait, Qatar blamed\u00a0Iran\u00a0for attacking the vessels, including the huge Qatari liquefied natural gas tanker, the Al Rekayyat, which reported being\u00a0struck\u00a0by a drone that caused a fire in its engine room.<\/p>\n

The crew were safe and being evacuated.<\/p>\n

A Saudi-flagged crude oil tanker, believed to be the supertanker Wedyan, was also damaged off Oman, maritime security sources said. The cause was not immediately clear.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s foreign ministry said Qatar\u2019s accusations were perplexing and that Tehran was diligently fulfilling its commitments. Even so, it said commercial vessels faced risks for using routes not coordinated with\u00a0Iran.<\/p>\n

A second US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said initial indications were that\u00a0Iran\u00a0had fired at three commercial vessels.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s clerical rulers aim to install a permanent system to collect fees in what would amount to a huge shift of the balance of power in a region where Washington has long acted as guarantor of security.<\/p>\n

The US strikes came after\u00a0huge crowds mourned\u00a0Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the holy city of Qom.<\/p>\n

Khamenei was killed with his daughter, granddaughter, son-in-law and daughter-in-law on the war\u2019s first day.<\/p>\n

The cease-fire was intended to provide a 60-day window for negotiations on a permanent agreement, but indirect talks in Qatar ended\u00a0last week\u00a0with no sign of headway.<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to resume bombing unless\u00a0Iran\u00a0agrees to \u201cmake a deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that under the terms of the interim cease-fire memorandum, negotiations on the final deal would \u201cnot commence if threats continue.\u201d<\/p>\n
