Everybody out!\u2019\u2019 an employee at the Westin Hotel at 212 E. 42nd St. screamed over the loudspeaker in the morning, sending customers and workers fleeing.<\/p>\n<p>Three tourists from North Carolina said they were set to stay at the Westin for four days before their ocean cruise, but they are now adrift without a place to bed down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw a breaking-news story pop up on Twitter,\u201d said one of the trio, Nika Whitsett, 33. \u201cI opened it and saw the streets. I said, \u2018Oh, 42nd and Second. That\u2019s where we\u2019re headed!\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hotel sent an email to patrons Tuesday evening saying, \u201cThe latest update is the site of concern remains a safety risk, indicating the evacuation order will not be lifted anytime soon and will last well into the night, at the earliest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was allowing them to go briely return to their rooms \u2014 but only to get their belongings.<\/p>\n<div>\n<iframe class=\"flourish-embed-iframe\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"600\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-forms allow-scripts allow-downloads allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/29616546\/embed\" style=\"width:100%\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p>A 22-year-old recent college grad who moved into an apartment on East 44th Street between Second and Third avenues just two days ago was trudging to her sister\u2019s place across town \u2014 with two pieces of luggage and a bag of groceries in tow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI woke up because there were a ton of sirens and like police megaphones telling people to get out of the intersection,\u201d said the young woman, who only gave her first name, Allie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to pack a bag, and then they started banging on the doors, and the Fire Department was saying that it might be like two weeks until we can get back \u2014 I\u2019m really hoping that that\u2019s some very cautious estimate,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t even have a bed yet.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Stefan Mitra, who lives at East 41st Street and First Avenue, said he came home from a 24-hour shift at a Bronx neurosurgery unit to the mess.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI slept an hour or two after my shift to be safe to drive, and then I came home thinking I\u2019d be able to go home and get to sleep some more, but now I\u2019m stuck,\u2019\u2019 Mitra said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorst-case scenario, I probably will have to find a hotel somewhere,\u2019\u2019 the doctor said. \u201cThere\u2019s no other option. I can\u2019t just wait forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sitting on a nearby flower bed was Mercy Muriungi, 52, who is based in Texas \u2014 but was in her part-time East 44th Street apartment at 9 a.m. when she got the notification demanding she evacuate.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=3940\">Graham Platner\u2019s ex-girlfriend alleges Maine Dem would sneakily pull off condoms during sex<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just grabbed my purse. I thought this was gonna be more like a drill,\u201d Muriungi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t taken out the trash, I left all my medicine in there. I had to walk over to the pharmacy to see if they would give me some medicine for a day or two,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p>A worker at the buckling building said he was on the fourth floor when \u201csomebody called my boss on the radio.<\/p>\n<p>He told everybody to leave the building.
