{"id":3928,"date":"2026-07-07T19:10:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T19:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=3928"},"modified":"2026-07-07T19:10:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T19:10:08","slug":"exclusive-nyc-midtown-building-evacuated-over-collapse-fears-is-riddled-with-prior-safety-issues-records","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=3928","title":{"rendered":"Exclusive | NYC Midtown building evacuated over collapse fears is riddled with prior\u00a0\u2018safety\u2019 issues: records"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The buckling Midtown hi-rise dramatically evacuated over collapse fears Tuesday was cited multiple times last year for dangerous construction safety violations, The Post has learned.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=3926\">Midtown NYC building \u2018shifting\u2019 and in danger of \u2018localized collapse\u2019: officials<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The city Department of Buildings slapped seven violations on the 38-story commercial building at 235 E. 42nd St. near Second Avenue between July and December 2025, resulting in a total of more than $32,000 in fines, agency records show.<\/p>\n<p>The violations included the site not adhering to plans laid out in submitted construction documents, a lack of pre-shift safety communication and the failure to report an incident that \u201cresulted in a fatality or injury,\u201d documents show.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The site\u2019s general contractor, Robert Travis of 235 GC LLC, was first dinged in July 2025 when\u00a0 a piece of window glass fell from the eighth floor and hit a sidewalk shed after an \u201cactive demo and alteration job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next month, a piece of metal fell off the building from the 33rd floor level and landed on the sidewalk below. Inspectors discovered workers didn\u2019t communicate required information during a pre-shift safety meeting.<\/p>\n<p>In December, a worker also fell 6 feet from a platform ladder while dismantling a crane,\u00a0 DOB documents said. Inspectors later found the ladder was not on a flat, level surface.<\/p>\n<p>More than two dozen bystander complaints also have been submitted to the DOB about the site, where construction started in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>They include an April call reporting debris falling from \u201chigh heights\u201d and a March incident where a worker was allegedly \u201cblowing material off of the roof \u2026 with a leaf blower.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In October, a caller told the Buildings Department, \u201cToday, a large item fell and broke through 5 floors and almost hit someone.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=3924\">Jalen Brunson quietly has surgery for injury that he battled during Knicks championship run<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are gas machines without proper ventilation. These are hazardous conditions,\u2019\u2019 the person claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Other complainants claimed objects were falling from \u201chigh up\u201d and landing on the sidewalk, including electrical equipment, in August.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear if the complaints made to the DOB were part of more than a dozen 311 calls made about the site dating back to last May detailing conditions \u201cendangering\u201d workers, as well as debris falling or at risk of doing so.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the callers alleged construction work beyond approved permits and work contrary to city-issued stop-work orders.<\/p>\n<p>A state comptroller\u2019s audit released last week reported that the DOB is significantly less staffed and has a much lower budget than in 2019 \u2014 including less money for inspectors.<\/p>\n<p>The Midtown building \u2014\u00a0 a former office site now set for 1,600 apartments and dubbed the most significant office-to-residential conversion in the US according to the Commercial Observer \u2014\u00a0 was evacuated around 8:11 a.m. Tuesday when construction workers spotted two faulty support beams bending and starting to give way.<\/p>\n<p>The structural support scare was reported Tuesday by the site safety manager, according to the DOB.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Fire officials said floors between the 21st and 26th floors were sagging from the pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=3922\">What Belgium coach told Folarin Balogun after World Cup red card drama exploded<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The buckling Midtown hi-rise dramatically evacuated over collapse fears Tuesday was cited multiple times last year for dangerous construction safety violations, The Post has learned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":3927,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3928","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-metro"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
