                                        {"id":3864,"date":"2026-07-06T21:38:45","date_gmt":"2026-07-06T21:38:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=3864"},"modified":"2026-07-06T21:38:45","modified_gmt":"2026-07-06T21:38:45","slug":"maine-dems-can-still-dump-embattled-graham-platner-as-long-as-he-beats-a-key-deadline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=3864","title":{"rendered":"Maine Dems can still dump embattled Graham Platner \u2014 as long as he beats a key deadline"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Maine Democrats still have time to replace Maine Senate nominee Graham Platner before the November 3rd midterm elections \u2014 but the window for a switch-a-roo is closing fast. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=3862\">Surprise frontrunner emerges in LeBron James sweepstakes<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Monday, POLITICO dropped a bombshell report from the Democratic candidate\u2019s ex-girlfriend claiming he entered her home uninvited and then raped her almost five years ago. <\/p>\n<p>Platner denied the alleged sexual assault, but said he is \u201cmindful\u201d of the political reality and is \u201ctaking the time to reflect on the best path forward.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The report follows Platner quietly canceling multiple Maine Senate campaign events.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Democrats need to win the Maine Senate race and defeat GOP incumbent Susan Collins for a real shot at winning back the Senate majority. Maine still has a chance to dump Platner and choose a new Democratic nominee  \u2014 as long as Platner decides to drop out by July 13.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Under Maine election rules, the Democratic Party can make a swap similar to the change from Joe Biden to Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election \u2014 with the candidate not having to win any primary. <\/p>\n<p>If Platner withdraws by July 13 at 5 p.m., party officials can pick a new candidate. <\/p>\n<p>The deadline to choose the replacement candidate is 5 p.m. on July 27, giving Democrats two weeks to decide on their best backup candidate to run in the general election campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This would give the new candidate 99 days to campaign \u2014\u00a0eight days shorter than Harris\u2019 sudden 2024 presidential run.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to Maine statute, it does not address how a replacement candidate may be chosen, but says that the candidate filling the vacancy must be a \u201cqualified person.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=3860\">Dem Graham Platner cancels multiple Maine Senate campaign events, reflects on \u2018path forward\u2019 after\u00a0bombshell sex assault accusation<\/a><\/p>\n<p>One Maine resident posted on X that he received a survey by text on Monday \u2014 before the POLITICO report was released \u2014 asking about a replacement candidate for Platner.<\/p>\n<p>The survey shared that \u201csome have suggested that Democrat Brian Bryant will step in to replace Platner on the ballot\u201d and asked respondents to answer who they\u2019d vote for between Collins and Bryant, a labor union official, and about Maine election laws.\u00a0There was no indication of who was sponsoring the text in the survey.<\/p>\n<p>Another name floating around for replacement is Troy Jackson \u2014 a progressive Democrat \u2014 who ran for Maine governor but lost and is a former state senator. Jackson received endorsements from Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) for his gubernatorial run. <\/p>\n<p>Gov. Janet Mills is another option, but Platner soundly defeated her in the primary. <\/p>\n<p>As of Monday, Platner is still the Democratic nominee, and the Democratic Party has not stated any plan to swap Platner as their candidate.
