FIFA president Gianni Infantino broke his silence Monday morning on the decision to\u00a0suspend USMNT star Folarin Balogun\u2019s one-game ban, news that rocked the World Cup as he\u2019s now allowed to play vs. Belgium Monday evening in the Round of 16.<\/p>\n

Infantino explained how the decision was reached and gave his side of\u00a0the phone call he had with President Trump, who earlier Monday said in the Oval Office he\u00a0asked Infantino to review the red card\u00a0but \u201cdidn\u2019t tell him what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have seen the public comments regarding the decision of the independent FIFA Disciplinary Committee related to the suspension of Folarin Balogun, and I would like to reiterate a fundamental principle of FIFA\u2019s governance,\u201d Infantino said in a statement.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump claimed Monday that he\u00a0asked FIFA supremo Gianni Infantino\u00a0to\u00a0review US striker Folarin Balogun\u2019s red card, which would have kept him out of an elimination match against Belgium \u2014 with Trump admitting that \u201cI didn\u2019t think it was a foul.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t tell [Infantino] what to do,\u201d the president responded to a Post reporter\u2019s question in the Oval Office. \u201cI can\u2019t tell him what to do, but \u2014 and I don\u2019t believe he made the decision. I think it was a committee that made the decision, and they made the right decision \u2014 because number one, it wasn\u2019t a foul, and you want to see a game with your best players.\u201d<\/p>\n

FIFA shocked the world Sunday by announcing that Balogun\u2019s one-match ban, typically an automatic consequence of any red card, would be suspended for up to one year, clearing the US star to play in Monday night\u2019s match.<\/p>\n

SEATTLE \u2014 FIFA\u2019s appeal committee denied\u00a0Belgium\u2019s appeal\u00a0of its decision on\u00a0Folarin Balogun\u2019s red card, meaning the U.S. men\u2019s national team star can indeed play against Belgium.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe request was rendered inadmissible on the grounds that the RBFA [Royal Belgian Football Association] is not a party to the proceedings and, as such, has no standing to appeal the decision,\u201d FIFA said in a statement.<\/p>\n

That is not an end to this extraordinary set of events, which has come to involve President Trump after\u00a0he called FIFA president Gianni Infantino\u00a0to \u2014 depending on who you believe \u2014 either request an explanation for Balogun\u2019s red card or request that it be overturned.<\/p>\n
