Belgian soccer officials on Monday were granted the right to appeal the ruling that resulted in USMNT\u2019s ace Folarin Balogun\u2019s ban being overturned \u2013 hours before the two nations clash in Seattle.<\/p>\n

Bosses of the European federation wrote to FIFA chiefs, saying they were \u201castonished\u201d by the dramatic decision, and the right to appeal has now been given the green light, anonymous sources told the Athletic.<\/p>\n

It now means a member of the FIFA appeals committee \u2013 who is not part of UEFA or CONCACAF \u2013 will now hear Belgium\u2019s case.<\/p>\n

Belgium and US Soccer bosses were ordered to make submissions by 5 a.m. PST Monday ahead of the appeal being heard.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s possible a ruling could be made before the last 16 game kicks off \u2013 but Belgian soccer authorities have reportedly not been given any guarantees.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not known if the outcome of the appeal will result in Balogun\u2019s ban being re-imposed.<\/p>\n

Balogun, 25, was given a red card during USMNT 2-0 win over Bosnia for what video assistant referees ruled as serious foul play.<\/p>\n

The referee on the field initially didn\u2019t blow his whistle for a foul on Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovi\u0107\u00a0 but was ordered to review the challenge on a monitor.<\/p>\n

The decision was highly controversial due to the use of slow motion, which made the foul look far worse than it did in real time, as well as that Balogun didn\u2019t appear to have any intent; rather, he didn\u2019t seem to have another place to put his foot.<\/p>\n

US Soccer claimed the VAR process was incorrectly applied, a source told The Post\u2019s Mark Cannizzaro.<\/p>\n

\u201cA legal appeal was sent to FIFA,\u2019\u2019 the source said. \u201cThey wanted to avoid CAS. The CAS legal was ready to go.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Trump specifically reached out to FIFA chief Gianni Infantino after the match on Wednesday, a US government official said.<\/p>\n

Though the appeal process is run by an independent board, the US government interjected and provided \u201cadditional evidence\u201d used in the appeal process, the source said.<\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately, the correct and proper outcome was achieved,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration supposedly challenged the use of slow-motion instant replay that gave Balogun his red card, arguing it violated FIFA\u2019s rules, sources told OutKick founder Clay Travis.<\/p>\n

FIFA cited Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which states that the \u201cjudicial body may decide to fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure.\u201d<\/p>\n

It also states that by \u201csuspending the implementation of the sanction, the judicial body subjects the person sanctioned to a probationary period of one to four years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump took to Truth Social to hail FIFA\u2019s decision after the news was announced.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you to FIFA for doing what was right and reversing a great injustice,\u201d the president, who has developed an incredibly close relationship with Infantino leading up to the World Cup, wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It was the first time since 1962 that FIFA had reversed a suspension.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know that at the World Cup, the 5th of July is actually the first of April \u2013 it\u2019s April Fools\u2019 [Day],\u201d Belgium\u2019s stunned head coach Rudi Garcia told reporters.<\/p>\n

Norway coach St\u00e5le Solbakken, who coached his team to a 2-1 win over Brazil, said the decision to overturn Balogun\u2019s ban was \u201ca big mistake by FIFA.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has got a red card, VAR concluded it was a red card, and he was sent off, so that means he is suspended for one game,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
