A Secret Service counter drone operator futilely searched the internet for the location of the rooftop President Trump\u2019s would-be assassin was spotted on as shots rang out at the July 13, 2024, campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, according to a Department of Homeland Security inspector general report released Thursday.<\/p>\n

The concluded Secret Service \u201cmissed multiple opportunities to detect, prevent, and disrupt\u201d deranged gunman Thomas Crooks\u2019 attempted assassination of Trump, including shocking communications failures that resulted in the president\u2019s protective detail never being warned that an armed man had climbed onto the American Glass Research International (AGR) complex\u2019s roof just 155 yards from the stage.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At 6:09 p.m., local law enforcement called the Secret Service and Pennsylvania State Police communications room \u201cwarning them of a suspicious person on the AGR complex\u2019s roof,\u201d\u00a0 according to the damning DHS report.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, the Secret Service communications room supervisor and the agency\u2019s counter drone operator \u201cdid not ask for the AGR complex\u2019s location \u2026. did not immediately identify it as a risk\u201d and the supervisor did not even \u201crecall learning that the suspicious person was on the roof\u201d because he had \u201cdelegated communications about the suspicious person to the counter drone operator because it was a \u2018busy time\u2019 on Secret Service radios and the counter drone operator was sitting near him and offered to help,\u201d the 64-page report continued.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Not knowing where the rooftop was situated relative to the rally site, the Secret Service counter drone operator apparently resorted to Google.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of asking local law enforcement personnel for the AGR complex\u2019s location, the counter drone operator searched online for it, and was still searching when Crooks fired his first shots,\u201d the report determined.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At 6:11 p.m. \u2013 just two minutes after Secret Service was informed a gunman was on the roof of the building \u2013 Crooks fired eight shots at Trump, grazing the president\u2019s ear, wounding others and killing one rally attendee.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately, although members of the local law enforcement communications room were increasingly concerned by the presence of a suspicious individual as early as 5:42 p.m.,\u201d the report continued, \u201cSecret Service communications room personnel did not identify Crooks as an urgent threat before he fired shots.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoreover, Secret Service decision-makers responsible for protecting President Trump while on stage at the Butler event were not made aware of Crooks\u2019 presence at any time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The agency\u2019s failure to establish a joint communications room with local law enforcement \u2013 which was receiving reports about a suspicious person at the rally later identified as Crooks \u2013 resulted in 102 radio transmissions about the gunman going unheard by Secret Service personnel.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A 5:42 p.m., radio transmission from local law enforcement warning, \u201cwe had a younger white male long hair lurking around the AGR building, he was viewed with a rangefinder sighting the stage \u2026 we lost sight of him,\u201d was among several increasingly frantic communications that went unheard by Secret Service.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI have someone on the roof with white shorts,\u201d local cops radioed at 6:08 p.m.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s armed, I saw him. He\u2019s laying down,\u201d an officer radioed at 6:11 p.m., just moments before Crooks opened fire, followed by, \u201cYou need to deploy to the AGR building \u2026 male on the roof with a long gun. Shots fired!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Secret Service \u200breceived only five phone calls and three text messages about Crooks, according to the report.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a result, Secret Service members did not alert President Trump\u2019s protective detail about concerns of a suspicious person,\u201d the findings concluded.<\/p>\n

The report also found Trump\u2019s campaign staff waved off Secret Service from positioning trucks between the AGR building and the stage ahead of the rally over concerns it would block cameras.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOn July 12, 2024 \u2026 the site agent counterpart told us she proposed placing the trucks between the AGR complex and the stage, but protectee staff denied the request because the trucks would be \u2018too close to [President Trump\u2019s] press shot,\u2019\u201d the DHS report found. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe site agent counterpart then proposed moving the trucks to a nearby location instead, which would block line of sight from a different area; protectee staff agreed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crooks was shot and killed by law enforcement at the rally shortly after he opened fire. \u200b<\/p>\n

The Secret Service did not immediately respond to The Post\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n
