President Trump brushed off questions about the money he\u2019s made while in office, saying his sons run his businesses and that he didn\u2019t know about the lucrative crypto investments that netted him over a billion dollars.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always made money,\u201d he told CNBC, pointing to his past career. \u201cI\u2019m a business person. I\u2019m a really good business person. I made money. I made a tremendous amount of money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others invest his income, and he doesn\u2019t know who they are, he noted.<\/p>\n

\u201cI let people invest it. I don\u2019t even speak to \u2013 I don\u2019t even know who they are,\u201d he said. \u201cMy son Eric handles it. I don\u2019t talk to him about things such as this.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to say his investments are given to \u201cbig firms\u201d who create \u201csemi-blind trusts or blind trusts.\u201d The president didn\u2019t offer further details on which firms oversee his fortune but said one reason his income rose was that \u201cthe stock market went up.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Trump\u2019s latest financial disclosure report showed he took in about $1.2 billion last year from various crypto holdings. He claimed he didn\u2019t know about the investments during a 40-minute interview in the Oval Office on Thursday.<\/p>\n

But he went on to say, if he did know about them, it wouldn\u2019t be illegal, noting the president and vice president are not required to recuse themselves from decisions that could affect their financial interests.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t. There\u2019s nothing illegal with that. I could know,\u201d he said, pointing out there is no legal requirement \u201cto recuse yourself on every decision running the country that could have anything to do with you. It just isn\u2019t feasible to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

For decades before he entered public service, Trump worked in the private sector, amassing a fortune from real estate deals, casinos, and his popular NBC show \u201cThe Apprentice.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pointed out he doesn\u2019t take a salary from the government while serving as president.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the Oval Office,\u201d he added. \u201cIt\u2019s a much bigger purpose than whether or not I make money. As an example, the president\u2019s the highest paid person in government, and you know, by some standards it gets a lot of money. \u2026 I gave up my salary. I don\u2019t get a salary.\u201d<\/p>\n

Presidents are usually paid an annual salary of $400,000.<\/p>\n

Trump established the Trump Organization to run his businesses long before he ran for office. His three children \u2013 Don Jr., Eric and Ivanka \u2013 were heavily involved, although his daughter has since stepped away.<\/p>\n

Because of the close ties of a family business, Trump said it was impossible for his children to distance themselves from decisions he made while president.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost anything my kids do \u2014 if they buy a truck \u2014 they have inside information,\u201d he said, arguing his children are facing unfair scrutiny for running their professional lives while he serves as president.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel badly in a way for my kids,\u201d he said, adding that \u201canything they do, because the presidency is so powerful \u2026 if they buy a cupcake company, well, the energy to make the cupcakes, is you know, sort of like, how\u2019s my energy policy?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSo it\u2019s pretty tough in that sense. I tell my kids, \u2018stay away,\u2019\u201d Trump said. \u201cBut they also have a life. You know, they were doing business long before I ever thought of \u2026 running for president.\u201d<\/p>\n

When pressed about the billions he made off crypto, Trump shrugged off a question about a possible conflict of interest.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe way I view crypto is a little differently. We have to be at the top, otherwise China is going to take it over,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

While president, Trump has pursued an aggressive pro-crypto policy, arguing the United States should be the \u201ccrypto capital of the world\u201d through deregulation, the establishment of a Bitcoin reserve, and supporting a stablecoin market backed by the dollar.<\/p>\n
