President Donald Trump has been consistent, and he is correct: America\u2019s allies must do more for their own defense and for our collective security.<\/p>\n

Britain has heard that message \u2014 and we are acting on it, putting our money where our mouth is.<\/p>\n

The United Kingdom is now undertaking its largest sustained increase in defense spending since the Cold War, on track to rise by 27% in real terms by 2030 as part of our commitment to reach 3.5% of GDP by 2035.<\/p>\n

Under our new Defense Investment Plan, published Tuesday, the UK has committed an\u00a0additional\u00a0$20 billion in funding\u00a0to a defense plan that\u2019s set to\u00a0spend $393 billion over the next four years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To put it in perspective,\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0more than enough money to buy all 32 NFL franchises \u2014 or the McDonald\u2019s Corporation.<\/p>\n

This weekend, the United Kingdom will proudly and wholeheartedly join our American friends to mark 250 years since the Declaration of Independence.<\/p>\n

We share an extraordinary story: What\u00a0began in bloody conflict in 1776 has been forged into the deepest, closest alliance between any two nations.<\/p>\n

Britain is determined to ensure we remain Washington\u2019s preeminent ally \u2014 side by side in defense, nuclear security and intelligence, together at the heart of NATO, AUKUS and the Five Eyes network.<\/p>\n

We are already NATO\u2019s third-highest defense spender in cash terms, an investment that\u2019s about reshaping our capabilities to prevail in the conflicts of tomorrow.<\/p>\n

A stronger Britain means a stronger NATO, and a stronger NATO means a more secure America.<\/p>\n

After all, Article V, the principle that an attack on one alliance member is an attack on all, has only been invoked once \u2014 in defense of the United States after 9\/11.<\/p>\n

And this British investment is flowing directly to American workers and businesses, because our two nations\u2019 defense industrial bases have long been connected.<\/p>\n

Between 2022 and 2024, allies agreed to buy $120 billion worth of weapons from US defense firms.<\/p>\n

By 2035, Lockheed Martin will supply 50% of all fighter jets in Europe.<\/p>\n

UK investment in US\u00a0defense\u00a0programs\u00a0supports more than 160,000 American jobs.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, at least 15% of every F-35\u00a0aircraft\u00a0is produced in the United Kingdom. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Our investments are not based on sentiment for past glories: They\u00a0are hard-headed\u00a0and informed by lessons learned from Ukraine and the Middle East.\u00a0<\/p>\n

We are modernizing our warfighting\u00a0capabilities across every domain.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why the UK\u2019s plan focuses on autonomous drones, new munitions, new warships and submarines, uncrewed missile systems and a new cyber force.<\/p>\n

Nowhere is the strength of UK-US defense expertise more evident than in the AUKUS military pact.<\/p>\n

Alongside Australia,\u00a0our three nations\u00a0are\u00a0building the\u00a0next\u00a0generation\u00a0of nuclear-powered\u00a0attack submarines and accelerating cooperation on emerging technologies for new\u00a0weapons systems and underwater capabilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For 250 years, the relationship between Britain and America has been one of the world\u2019s greatest strategic partnerships.<\/p>\n

The bedrock is our willingness to jointly bear the burdens of leadership, our shared sacrifice and the defense of the common values we cherish.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0United Kingdom\u00a0is\u00a0investing in the future of our transatlantic alliance, giving our extraordinary service personnel the equipment and powers they need to fight and win.<\/p>\n

Our commitment ensures that the UK and the US will meet the challenges of a more dangerous and contested world \u2014 together.\u00a0<\/p>\n
