Mayor Zohran Mamdani is bragging that the budget he just pushed through proves socialists understand the economy as well as capitalists, and that, indeed, they\u2019re cleaning up the capitalists\u2019 mess.<\/p>\n

What utter bull. He\u2019s proved nothing about socialism as an economic boon, and his spending plan actually makes the city\u2019s fiscal mess worse.<\/em><\/p>\n

No matter: The mayor pretends he\u2019s an ultra-competent manager, a wizard of municipal finance and a dedicated socialist who\u2019ll make New York affordable and \u201cequitable.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIf these past months have shown us anything,\u201d he burbled, \u201cit is that socialists not only understand economics just as well as the capitalists who came before, but that we can solve their years of mismanagement through an embrace of our principles.\u201d<\/p>\n

Get a grip, Mr. Mayor. None of that tracks with reality.<\/p>\n

First of all, there\u2019s nothing \u201ccapitalist\u201d about balancing a city\u2019s budget. It\u2019s a question of making ends meet. And Mamdani only barely <\/em>did that \u2014 and only through gimmicks and shoddy financing.<\/p>\n

Besides, the budgets of his predecessor, Eric Adams, were nothing any hard-core capitalist would approve of. <\/p>\n

If anything, any \u201cmismanagement\u201d on the former mayor\u2019s part \u2014 bloated, ever-expanding budgets that understated outlays \u2014 is characteristic of socialists<\/em>, not capitalists. <\/p>\n

If <\/em>Mamdani were truly fixing anything, it would be the mess of merely a somewhat-less socialist-minded mayor.<\/p>\n

Yet Mamdani\u2019s budget makes matters worse<\/em>: His budget takes Adams\u2019 last plan and adds <\/em>another $10 billion in new spending, while, as city Comptroller Mark Levine (a fellow Democrat) notes, relying on \u201c$6.1 billion in short-term and one-time measures.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

And he\u2019s depending on Wall Street to fork over a disproportionate amount of the city\u2019s income, including nearly a quarter of personal income-tax revenue, to pay for it.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Hizzoner hasn\u2019t done a lick to boost local economic growth, attract business or create new jobs (except for those on his propaganda staff). <\/p>\n

Just the opposite: He\u2019s gotten firms \u2014 like Ken Griffin\u2019s Citadel \u2014 to look to do business elsewhere. <\/p>\n

So he\u2019s already hurt<\/em> the economy, while having no plans to grow it. (And, no, adding government workers is not economically productive.)<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

If the mayor has some ideas for creating economic value as a socialist, we\u2019d love to hear them.<\/p>\n

But so far all he\u2019s talking about is more spending, with the hope <\/em>that he can find the money to close gaps later.<\/p>\n

Of course, Mamdani might be right to talk up socialism now; it might be his only chance.<\/p>\n

Because if he manages to employ too much of it, the damage it causes will be so obvious, no one will buy his boasts later.<\/p>\n
