WASHINGTON \u2014\u00a0The Supreme Court smacked down President Trump\u2019s\u00a0executive order\u00a0denying\u00a0birthright citizenship\u00a0to children of illegal immigrants and tourists, quashing a marquee policy of his for the second time in six months.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s day one order had been in limbo amid\u00a0a legal battle\u00a0over whether it\u00a0violated the 14th Amendment, which states: \u201cAll persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.\u201d<\/p>\n

The subsequent Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 clarified that birthright citizenship is automatically granted to \u201ca person born in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof.\u201d<\/p>\n

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) chided Rep. Tom Kean (R-NJ) on Tuesday for not being “more transparent” about a health condition that has kept him away from his legislative duties for nearly four months, while emphasizing the prolonged absence wasn’t “scandalous.”<\/p>\n

“There’s no conspiracy involved,” Johnson said in a news conference on Capitol Hill. “This isn’t scandalous at all. He has a health condition, as he said. If it were me, I would have been more specific about that, and I encouraged him to be, and he will today.”<\/p>\n

“It’s not an uncommon kind of condition and ailment that he’s been fighting, and I think people resonate with that. I think he’ll get a lot of empathy,” added Johnson.<\/p>\n

“I’ll say this about my colleague: he’s a genuinely good man. He comes from a long line … in public service. His family is very well known for their service, and he’s a person of integrity, and I think he’ll address this with the integrity and the character that he’s always shown us as a great team player, a patriot, a faithful hope servant,” Johnson continued.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON \u2014 The Supreme Court ruled that federal limits on coordinated spending between political parties and their preferred candidates are unconstitutional, a decision with sweeping implications for this year\u2019s midterm elections and beyond.<\/p>\n

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) had\u00a0mounted a First Amendment challenge\u00a0in 2022 to the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971, arguing that it unconstitutionally capped so-called \u201ccoordinated funding expenditures,\u201d which are mainly used for campaign advertising.<\/p>\n

The high court had upheld the\u00a0expenditure limits\u00a0in the 2001 case of FEC v. Colorado Republican Federal Campaign Committee, but the NRSC argued that events since that ruling \u2014 including the rise of Super PACs, changes in campaign finance law, and the court\u2019s own decision in\u00a02010\u2019s Citizens United v. FEC\u00a0\u2014 had made the 2001 decision obsolete.<\/p>\n

“So far, no funds have been transferred,” Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said Tuesday.<\/p>\n

It came a day ahead of an Iranian delegation\u2019s planned trip to Doha, where Iranian sources say Tehran intends to hammer out how to access the frozen funds.<\/p>\n

House Republicans on Monday unveiled a plan to combine President Trump\u2019s long-sought election integrity legislation with a must-pass defense policy bill.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to pass a MIRV, or what\u2019s better known as a merge onto the rule,\u201d House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters, according to The Hill. \u201cSo what that means is, when Republicans vote for the rule, they\u2019ll be voting not just for the [National Defense Authorization Act] and everything else is there, but they\u2019ll be voting to merge onto that the SAVE America Act we passed back in February.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that will send both of those items together over to the Senate, and so if any Republicans choose to vote against the rule, they will be voting against that outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

The House Rules Committee advanced the $1.1 trillion NDAA and the gambit to attach the Save America Act to it Monday night.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The top Democrat on the rules panel, Rep. James McGovern (D-Mass.), said he expects the Senate to remove the Save America Act from the NDAA if the defense bill clears the full House.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Senate will just strip the SAVE Act out,\u201d McGovern said, according to Politico. \u201cThere is a zero percent chance SAVE ends up in the [NDAA] because of this rule today.\u201d<\/p>\n
