It\u2019s been a rough weekend for Scott Wiener.<\/p>\n

The California state senator, who is hoping to replace the retiring Nancy Pelosi in Congress later this year, was heading over to San Francisco\u2019s Trans March last Friday when he was circled by a gaggle of radicals, some sporting keffiyehs and covering their faces.<\/p>\n

Yelling invectives and giving Wiener the finger, they accused the uber-progressive lawmaker \u2014 himself a gay man and one of the state\u2019s most effective legislators on LGBTQ issues \u2014 of being \u201cterrible on Gaza.\u201d At some point, one of the thugs taunted Wiener, who is Jewish, about having \u201cIsraeli handlers.\u201d<\/p>\n

A video of the ambush shows Wiener looking stunned, and eventually hurrying out of the park without attending the march.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen opposition and disagreement transition to harassment,\u201d he said later that day in a statement, \u201cincluding cornering me, touching me, or trying to physically bully me out of a public event, that crosses a line. We\u2019re living in a time when violence is all too often threatened or used against people in public life. In San Francisco, we\u2019re better than that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Except that, as the video of the assault so clearly shows, San Francisco isn\u2019t <\/em>better than that, and neither, sadly, are the rest of us.<\/p>\n

Because more, maybe, than any other scuffle in recent memory, the assault on Wiener showed just how truly all-around broken our political culture has become.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s begin with the thugs themselves.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou stopped being queer the moment you started supporting Israel, you piece of s\u2013t,\u201d shrieked one assailant, giving us the clearest peek we\u2019ve had yet into the minds of the so-called \u201cpro-Palestine\u201d crowd.<\/p>\n

First, this statement assumes that nothing else matters but the obsession with a conflict unfurling thousands of miles away. Not housing for poor folks in Sacramento. Not health care for working families in Fresno. Not the real-life concerns of any real, live Americans \u2014 just \u201cPalestine,\u201d or, more accurately, a burning hatred for Israel.<\/p>\n

Second, the assault on Wiener gave us proof, as if any further proof were needed, that you can never satisfy the bloodlusty lunatics on the left. Wiener had already publicly succumbed to his party\u2019s most raging radicals. Earlier this year, he abandoned his previously ever-so-slightly nuanced position on the conflict \u2014 one that put at least some of the blame on Hamas and its campaign of rapes and massacres \u2014 and declared Israel guilty of \u201cgenocide.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following widespread condemnations from California Jews of all stripes, Wiener stepped down as the co-chair of the state\u2019s Jewish Caucus. None of that was nearly enough for the hordes cornering him on Friday.<\/p>\n

Why?<\/p>\n

Because \u201cpro-Palestine\u201d is simply a slightly more pleasant term for rabid Jew-hatred. The goons poking their fingers at Wiener weren\u2019t protesting any of his policies or positions. They were simply having fun beating up on a Jew, just as their spiritual ancestors in Berlin had done not even a century ago.<\/p>\n

And they\u2019re hardly outliers. From New York\u2019s mayor, who has referred to pro-Israel advocates as \u201cmonsters,\u201d to our soon-to-be congresswoman, Darializa Avila Chevalier, who attended a pro-Hamas rally on October 8, 2023, the Democratic Party is now the party of bigotry, violence, and hate.<\/p>\n

Which, sadly, doesn\u2019t mean that Wiener himself is an innocent victim here. Cowardice and complacency aren\u2019t minor character flaws. And it doesn\u2019t take a particularly brilliant student of history to realize that you can never, ever appease the revolutionaries: All you can do is buy yourself a little more time before they put you, too, up against a wall.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Wiener learned his lesson the hard way Friday. But scores of Jewish Democrats, all of them remarkably silent in the face of this hostile takeover of their party by a band of maniacs, are still shying away from confrontation, keeping mum and hoping that the hordes will spare them somehow.<\/p>\n

News flash for Chuck Schumer, et al.: They won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Finally, watching Wiener flee, haggard and humiliated, too many conservatives cheered, delighted by the spectacle of the left eating its own. This, too, must stop. We only have two political parties in America, and when one gets consumed by the sort of savages who think nothing of roughing up an opponent simply because he\u2019s Jewish, we\u2019re in deep, deep trouble.<\/p>\n

Kicking these benighted savages out of the Democratic Party, out of politics, and, whenever possible, out of America is a tall order. Here\u2019s hoping it\u2019s one that can still bring all sane Americans together, no matter their partisan affiliation.<\/p>\n
