Despite a contract extension last month that would\u2019ve kept Steve Clark as Scotland\u2019s head soccer coach through the 2030 World Cup, he decided to resign following its exit in this year\u2019s tournament.<\/p>

Clark stepped down Saturday after Scotland \u2014 who won a match and lost two in Group C \u2014 was officially eliminated.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most emotional part of this goodbye is for my players, without whom we wouldn\u2019t have had any of the memories that we\u2019ve accumulated from 2019 until now,\u201d Clark wrote in a letter to fans, according to The Athletic. \u201cThey deserve all the praise and adulation that they receive and it was truly an honor to be called their gaffer. Thanks for having me and good luck to my successor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clark, 62, had been in charge of Scotland for seven years, and the country\u2019s fanbase emerged as one of the popular ones in the World Cup \u2014 with the Tartan Army taking over scenes at Fenway Park and loanDepot Park in Boston and Miami, respectively.<\/p>\n

Scotland\u2019s appearance in the World Cup marked its first since 1998, adding to a stretch after Clark took over in 2019 that also included appearances in the 2020 and 2024 European Championships.<\/p>\n
