\u201cThe chickens are coming home to roost,\u201d one young Democratic operative ruefully told me Wednesday, as we surveyed the wreckage that remained after a raft of far-left House candidates won stunning primary-night victories.<\/p>\n

Indeed, Tuesday\u2019s Democratic Socialist romp\u00a0can\u2019t be blamed on outside factors like inflation or Israel or the national party\u2019s mad obsession with countering President Donald Trump\u2019s every move.<\/p>\n

No, it\u2019s the result of 15 years of New York Democrats\u2019 single-party rule \u2014 and the monstrous ego of Andrew Cuomo.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The former governor\u2019s utterly narcissistic presidential ambitions launched New York down a progressive road to perdition.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Starting with relatively mild policies like marriage equality, Cuomo made concession after concession to thwart leftist challengers \u2014 from authorizing \u201cbail reforms\u201d that released hordes of repeat offenders, to onerous climate laws that hiked utility bills, to anti-landlord measures that worsened the housing crisis.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the state Democratic Party developed sclerosis as establishment leaders grew lazy, fat, comfortable and corrupt.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The stunning 2018 defeat of Queens powerbroker Rep. Joe Crowley by lefty ex-waitress Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez should have clued them in to the Democratic Socialists of America\u2019s viral plot to remake Cuomo\u2019s party.<\/p>\n

But they let it slide \u2014 and even now, Democrats are demonstrating an alarming capitulation to political extremism.<\/p>\n

A clueless Gov. Kathy Hochul was in Erie County on primary day, too busy dedicating the Buffalo Bills\u2019 new state-subsidized football stadium to campaign with her downstate allies and keep them from getting their butts kicked by her bestie, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and his DSA.<\/p>\n

Her out-of-touch naivety is typical of what passes for the party\u2019s leadership today.<\/p>\n

Hochul spent the past six months cozying up to Mamdani and using the state budget \u2014 and her taxing authority \u2014 to bail out his massive deficit spending.<\/p>\n

The Buffalo Gal is not a left-wing radical, but something far worse: a craven politician whose only goal is getting safely re-elected without Mamdani & Co. mounting a challenge from her left flank.<\/p>\n

\u201cNew York is no longer blue, it\u2019s red and green,\u201d a veteran Democratic consultant grumbled to me in disgust.<\/p>\n

Mission accomplished, Kathy.<\/p>\n

Her primary-prevention strategy only cost regular Democrats three<\/em> House seats, eight Assembly seats and four State senate seats, including the ouster of six incumbents.<\/p>\n

Despite this bloodbath, one high-level local party leader spoke to me optimistically of his belief that Democrats can \u201cwork together\u201d with DSA.<\/p>\n

Several other Democrats told me they think the party can negotiate an accommodation with the Israel-hating socialists.<\/p>\n

Are they so deluded \u2014 or so terrified \u2014 that they\u2019ll pretend not to have heard the roomful of radicals\u2019 chants of \u201cFrom the river to the sea, Palestine will be free\u201d at the NYC-DSA victory party?<\/p>\n

Or shut their ears to the mob\u2019s \u201cYou\u2019re next!\u201d shouts upon seeing House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on the TV screen?<\/p>\n

Listen up, establishment Democrats: Mamdani and the DSA don\u2019t want to \u201cwork together.\u201d<\/p>\n

They want no part of your big tent.<\/p>\n

They want to burn it to the ground \u2014 preferably with you inside.<\/p>\n

As an ex-Democratic lawmaker, I\u2019m angry that party leaders think they can build a united front with these reds.<\/p>\n

The DSA isn\u2019t consensus-driven; it\u2019s steeped in an ideological warfare mindset where it\u2019s their way or the graveyard.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Like the Soviet Union\u2019s kulaks a century ago, New York\u2019s Democratic moderates and liberals will be purged.<\/p>\n

The shocking defenestration of Espaillat and Goldman will be used to bully surviving Dems into falling in line with the new DSA order \u2014 lest they, too, be taken out in the next election cycle.\u00a0<\/p>\n

New York Democrats can and must fight back.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re facing an existential crisis \u2014 and the worst thing they can do is succumb to the radicals inside<\/em> their tent.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I believe a politics of resentment and scapegoating fueled the rise of Trump and his America First movement, and that something very similar is animating Mamdani and the DSA.<\/p>\n

Such divisiveness was anathema to the Democratic Party that drew me in 40 years ago.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

It was obscene<\/em> of Jeffries and other DC Dems to brush aside concerns about Mamdani and his socialist comrades and point to Trump as a bigger threat.<\/p>\n

The DSA\u2019s dangerous messaging on criminal justice, wealth redistribution, climate change and foreign policy will do this nation serious harm.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Democrats need new, nimble thinking to address these issues and thus reconnect to a distressed electorate.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A rotten, corrupt establishment paved the way for Tuesday\u2019s disaster \u2014 one that will ripple far beyond city limits.<\/p>\n

Unless New York Democrats reverse course, and soon, voters will make Hochul pay for her cowardice and appeasement in November.<\/p>\n
