WASHINGTON \u2014\u00a0Democrats erupted over the Supreme Court for handing dueling victories to the Trump administration on two major immigration cases, with some pushing to expand the bench.<\/p>\n

The high court ruled that the Trump administration could yank temporary protective status (TPS) away from thousands of Haitian and Syrian migrants, and in a separate case, cleared the way for the turning away of migrants who show up at the US-Mexico border\u00a0before they apply for asylum.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday Trump\u2019s loyalists in the Supreme Court have joined forces with him to deny immigrants internationally recognized human rights and advance an authoritarian white supremacist agenda,\u201d Rep. Delia\u00a0Ramirez (D-Ill.) fumed. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe must demand better of our country and its leaders, and we must turn up the volume in the streets, in the courts, and in Congress, because today is a moment to stand up and to fight back.\u201d<\/p>\n

TPS allows migrants to stay in the US with deportation protection and the ability to pursue work authorization.<\/p>\n

Justices in the conservative majority had simply ruled that President Trump had the authority based on the statutes Congress had written. <\/p>\n

With Haitian and Syrian migrants, for example, justices in the conservative majority zeroed in on how the statute behind TPS stipulated there could be \u201cno judicial review of any determination \u2026 with respect to the \u2026 termination\u2019 of a TPS designation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, Democrats blamed the Supreme Court for allowing Trump to yank TPS for thousands of Haitian and Syrian migrants, clearing the way for their deportation. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe far-right MAGA majority on the Court cannot stand,\u201d Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) raged on X. \u201cWe need to win back the House and the Senate and expand the Court.\u201d<\/p>\n

His former primary foe, whom he bested in May, Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.), demanded Democrats \u201creform the court to preserve our rights and protect TPS families.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. Laura Gillen (D-NY) panned the decision as \u201ccruel\u201d and \u201cun-American.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis flies in the face of the administration\u2019s own designation of Haiti as a maximum travel risk,\u201d she added. \u201cThe Supreme Court\u2019s cruel and harmful decision to end TPS for the hardworking law-abiding Haitians in this country now puts our friends and our neighbors\u2019 lives at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

She touted Democrat-backed legislation to extend TPS protections for Haitian migrants. <\/p>\n

Fellow New York Rep. Mike Lawyer (R) had also torn into the Trump administration\u2019s move to pull TPS from Haitian migrants, though he never disputed that the president had the authority to do so, which was the issue before the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

Juan Vargas (D-Calif.) blasted the decision as a \u201ctotal betrayal of our nation\u2019s commitment and values.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is no longer a Supreme Court. This is a rubber stamp, that\u2019s all it is. It\u2019s a rubber stamp for this crooked president,\u201d Vargas chided. <\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) vowed to \u201ccontinue to stand up against the overreach of Trump\u2019s reckless deportation agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHaiti is in the grip of a humanitarian catastrophe,\u201d she declared in a statement. \u201cThis decision betrays families who followed the law, built lives here, and sought refuge from unimaginable violence. The Haitian community is part of the fabric of New York.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Supreme Court still has several major cases outstanding this term and is set to have another opinion day next Monday. <\/p>\n
