Not long ago, new kinds of jobs appeared: app-based gig work.<\/p>\n

They include jobs like dog walking on Rover, Taskrabbit work, DoorDash food delivery, Uber and Lyft driving, and many more.<\/p>\n

Lots of people like gig work.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s flexible; you work when you want to work.<\/p>\n

But \u201cworkers\u2019 rights\u201d activists and governing socialists don\u2019t like that.<\/p>\n

Gig workers rarely join unions. They don\u2019t get a minimum wage.<\/p>\n

\u201cUber and Lyft exploit their workers\u201d is a headline at MS NOW. \u201cWe can\u2019t ignore it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The democratic socialists said they had a solution.<\/p>\n

Seattle\u2019s City Council imposed a $26 delivery-driver minimum wage.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What could go wrong?<\/p>\n

Two years later, we know the answer: Gig workers make no more money, but prices go up.<\/p>\n

Apps like DoorDash and Uber Eats added a $5 fee for consumers \u201cto help cover the costs of these . . . regulations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now Seattle residents complain about prices.<\/p>\n

\u201cI ordered a $12 sandwich . . . $12 grew to $32!\u201d one complained to me recently.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just deleted the app.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

App drivers are complaining, too.<\/p>\n

Work \u201chas become slow because of the new law,\u201d one of them said.<\/p>\n

And DoorDash itself got 1.7 million fewer Seattle orders.<\/p>\n

This is what happens when politicians dictate wages.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, when you\u2019re increasing cost to businesses, you\u2019re going to increase costs to customers,\u201d said economics professor Judge Glock.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are unimaginably complicated markets where the company\u2019s main job is interfacing between restaurants and<\/em> delivery workers and<\/em> customers,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen you have an economically illiterate city council or mayor who thinks, basically by looking at an industry through reading the news, they can appropriately regulate the exact wage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former Seattle City Council President Sara Nelson admitted that the politicians made a mistake.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe created a problem and it\u2019s our responsibility to fix it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

So they repealed the harmful law, right?<\/p>\n

No.<\/p>\n

Nelson said they just needed to adjust their numbers: \u201cIf we had gotten the minimum pay standard right, we would not see the decline in the revenue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Such conceit!<\/p>\n

Somehow, the political class thinks it knows exactly what every worker should be paid.<\/p>\n

Price controls never work.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Flexible pricing does.<\/p>\n

Competition forces businesses to constantly adjust pay and prices to attract workers and customers.<\/p>\n

When smug politicians think they can set a price that\u2019s \u201cright,\u201d \u201cit\u2019s just patently absurd,\u201d said Glock.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not going to have any improved well-being for people, and you\u2019re not going to have increased wages for those workers.\u201d<\/p>\n

A similar minimum-wage increase failed in New York City, after politicians guaranteed app-based drivers an hourly minimum of about $20.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe decrease in tips and increased competition for jobs offset all of the gains from that imposed minimum wage,\u201d said Glock.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s this continual whack-a-mole tendency: The market responds, [so politicians] pass a new regulation to try to prevent that response.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThey think the next regulation will somehow squelch the greed out of the system, but there\u2019s simply no way to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Competition is the only good way to decide what people get paid.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of politicians believe there\u2019s a free lunch or a fixed pot of money that they can give out to the neediest people.\u201d said Glock.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe actual effect was not to improve the well-being of workers, but to increase costs for customers \u2014 and sabotage one of the most successful businesses in the city.\u201d<\/p>\n
