Adriano Espaillat in Tuesday\u2019s main event primary, data shows.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=2888\">The radical left IS taking over the Democratic Party \u2014 and it\u2019s the establishment\u2019s fault<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The overall low turnout \u2014 roughly 17% of Democratic voters citywide \u2014 came as Avila Chevalier and two other Mamdani-backed House primary winners captured a mix of high-earning, young, white and black voters, analysts found.<\/p>\n<p>Insiders also credited the Democratic Socialists of America\u2019s formidable field operations for turning out voters who\u2019d back Mamdani\u2019s preferred candidates \u2014 setting the stage for a potential party takeover by the DSA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was the red wedding and the victims of the red wedding were the Democrats,\u201d said JC Polanco, a political analyst and professor at the University of Mount Saint Vincent in The Bronx.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a hostile takeover by the Democratic Socialists of America who have demonstrated that they have the organization to win primaries where there is no voter turnout,\u201d Polanco told The Post Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some of these districts nobody votes, it\u2019s a very small turnout and the Democratic Socialists of America come in and win. They\u2019ve taken over the party locally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even for ultra-liberal New York City, the wins by Mamdani\u2019s candidates ultimately came from small slivers of the city\u2019s approximately 3 million active Democratic voters, data shows.<\/p>\n<p>Avila Chevalier drew roughly 33,000 votes from 449,000 active voters in the 13th House District covering much of Upper Manhattan, including Harlem, and a swath of the Bronx, preliminary election data shows.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Rattner, an economic analyst, posted on X that election data showed college-educated, non-Hispanic voters were more likely to vote for Avila Chevalier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast night\u2019s big wins for Mamdani-backed candidates were driven by young college grads, often at odds with the party\u2019s traditional working-class &amp; minority base,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The district is predominantly Hispanic and black, with respectively 52% and 23% of residents, according to US Census data. Roughly 28% of residents have a college degree and the typical household income is $52,000 a year.<\/p>\n<p>Avila Chevalier swept white voters \u2014 68% to Espaillat\u2019s 39%, according to VoteHub, a nonpartisan political media organization. White residents represent just 15% of the district, Census data shows.<\/p>\n<p>The community organizer and doctoral candidate also won 55% of the vote in heavily black precincts, compared to her opponent\u2019s 45%, VoteHub found. <\/p>\n<p>Insiders pointed out Espaillat, the first formerly undocumented member of Congress and first Dominican-American, had drawn on the district\u2019s large Hispanic population as a power base over his five terms in office.<\/p>\n<p>But he also had a strained relationship with Harlem\u2019s black establishment. He alienated many black voters with his past challenges against longtime Rep. Charles Rangel, said Harlem power broker Keith Wright.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=2886\">Air Canada flight forced to divert to Boston airport after pilot becomes incapacitated: officials<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspaillat\u2019s support in the black community was very soft,\u201d Wright said. \u201cDemocrats voted for change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wright noted his son Jordan Wright, who is not part of the DSA, prevailed in his bid to keep his state Assembly seat in Central Harlem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople split the ticket,\u201d he said, noting some Democrats might have backed Avila Chevalier while also voting for his son over DSA rival Conrad Blackburn.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 70th Assembly district \u2014 known as \u201cBlack Harlem\u201d \u2014\u00a0saw Avila Chevalier receive 7,700 votes to 5,500 for Espaillat, election data shows.<\/p>\n<p>Espaillat only carried one uptown district \u2014 his power base in Washington Heights \u2014 but only by 6,900 to\u00a05,700 votes, according to the data.<\/p>\n<p>Like Avila Chevalier, fellow Mamdani-backed DSA diehard Claire Valdez\u2019s win came from a small group \u2014 roughly 38,000 votes out of 456,000 active total voters in the 7th House District, or 8.24% of the voting public, data shows.<\/p>\n<p>Despite her opponent, progressive Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, faring well among the Satmar Hasidic community, Valdez outperformed him among white and Hispanic voters \u2014 similar to the coalition that propelled Mamdani to Gracie Mansion, VoteHub found.<\/p>\n<p>She also captured higher-income voters in the affluent district that covers part of Brooklyn\u2019s and Queens\u2019 \u201cCommie Corridor,\u201d including Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Astoria and Long Island City. White people account for 37% of residents, followed by 36% Hispanic, 13% Asian and 10% black, according to US Census data.<\/p>\n<p>Former City Comptroller Brad Lander\u2019s blowout victory over Rep. Dan Goldman in the Tenth Congressional District came from massive margins from nearly every demographic group, the VoteHub analysis found.<\/p>\n<p>Lander, as a former City Council member, was long a political fixture in the district\u2019s Brooklyn neighborhoods of Park Slope and Sunset Park in Brooklyn.
