“As long as they respect us, we’re not going to have any trouble,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office \u2014 after praising Vice President JD Vance’s role in peace talks in Switzerland, where implementation of last week’s memorandum of understand was discussed.<\/p>\n

“As long as they respect us, we’re going to be fine. They don’t respect us, things wouldn’t be good, but they have a lot of respect,” Trump said.<\/p>\n

President Trump signed a pair of executive orders Monday to promote quantum computing \u2014 alongside tech leaders including UBM CEO Arvind Krishna and Google President Ruth Corrath.<\/p>\n

One EO launches a federal initiative to produce an extremely powerful quantum computing platform for scientific uses. The other orders federal agencies to transition to “quantum cryptography” within five years to ensure “extremely strong security standards.”<\/p>\n

Google President Ruth Corrath touted the power of advanced computing.<\/p>\n

“We unveiled a new chip, the Willow chip, which is a great example of American innovation manufactured here in the United States, and what the Willow chip does is it enabled us to do a computation in less than five minutes that previously on the best supercomputer would have taken 10 septillion years,” she said, allowing for “medical breakthroughs, nuclear fusion” and other projects. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

Vice President JD Vance described his Iranian counterparts as “extremely confusing” negotiators as he departed technical talks in Switzerland.<\/p>\n

“I’ve spent a lot of time dealing with the Iranians over the last few months. Sometimes I find them extremely confusing as negotiators,” Vance told reporters when asked about Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi at one point not shaking his hand.<\/p>\n

“I would just encourage the media, mistrust a little bit what you see coming out of Iranian social media. They can be confusing negotiators, but we feel like we’re making progress.”<\/p>\n

Vance also touted “great” progress toward allowing nuclear inspectors into Iran and described the development of plans to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open and to enforce a cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

Rubio to visit Gulf states most targeted by Iran this week<\/h2>\n

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to visit some of the Gulf states hardest hit by Iran to discuss the new US-Iran memorandum of understanding and efforts to fully open the Strait of Hormuz, the State Department said Monday.<\/p>\n

Rubio will travel to the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain Tuesday through Thursday, rounding off the week with a meeting of the full Gulf Cooperation Council “to discuss shared priorities across the region.”<\/p>\n

While Gulf leaders were generally supportive of an end to the US-Iran war, some had concerns about specific provisions in the MOU \u2014 which notably did not address Iran’s ballistic missile stockpile. They have also taken issue with Iran’s threats to charge a fee to access the strait following the MOU’s 60-day negotiation period that calls for free transit through the waterway.<\/p>\n

The UAE, Kuwait and Bahrain all host US military forces, as do Qatar and Saudi Arabia, making those countries targets for Iranian aggression.<\/p>\n

Gulf states have collectively suffered roughly $58 billlion in damages since the start of Operation Epic Fury on Feb. 28, according to one estimate cited by the Council on Foreign Relations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei claimed Monday that nothing has changed about Tehran’s work with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) after Vice President JD Vance claimed the Islamic Republic had agreed to let nuclear inspectors “back into their country” as a result of US-Iran peace talks.<\/p>\n

“Iran\u2019s interactions with the agency, in line with its obligations under safeguard agreements, will continue according to the existing framework and in compliance with the resolutions of the Islamic Consultative Assembly and the decisions of the Supreme National Security Council,” Baghaei said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The semi-official Tasnim media outlet, which has strong links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was more blunt: “The issue of granting permission for IAEA inspectors to enter Iran was not approved by the Iranian negotiating team or by responsible government officials.”<\/p>\n

President Trump to meet Senate GOP with voter ID, FISA bills stalled<\/h2>\n

WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump will head to Capitol Hill Wednesday for a closed-door meeting with Senate Republicans to discuss voter ID legislation and the reauthorization of the government’s foreign spying powers.<\/p>\n

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) extended the invitation last week for Trump to attend the weekly GOP caucus lunch, as he and other GOP senators have been pushing Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to take up the voter ID legislation.<\/p>\n

“I talked to President Trump about this yesterday \u2014\u00a0he wants, we all want, to get the SAVE America Act done,” Scott told Fox News’ “Saturday in America with Kayleigh McEnany.”<\/p>\n

“Let’s stay in DC to get this done.”<\/p>\n

Trump, however, has tied the fate of that bill — which would be impossible to pass without breaking the 60-vote Senate filibuster — to the reauthorization of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which allows for warrantless searches of communications by terror suspects and other overseas persons of interest.<\/p>\n

The president further complicated the matter by installing his federal housing director, Bill Pulte, as acting head of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence \u2014 and demanding that Manhattan US Attorney Jay Clayton eventually assume that role permanently.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Trump asked the Senate to install a successor for Clayton before his confirmation hearing. Democrats and some Republicans are opposed to Pulte’s acting role at ODNI and wanted to confirm Clayton as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made clear Monday that his forces will remain in southern Lebanon despite the recently announced US-Iran-Lebanon “de-confliction cell” formed following the first round of peace talks between Washington and Tehran in Switzerland.<\/p>\n

“IDF troops in southern Lebanon have full freedom of operation to engage any direct or emerging threat to them or to the residents of northern Israel,” said Netanyahu, according to a translated video of his Hebrew-language remarks. “The IDF has no restrictions in this regard.”<\/p>\n

The de-confliction cell is aimed at preventing a return to full-scale conflict between Israeli and Hezbollah, which Iran claims must be settled before discussions about a larger deal can take place.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

President Trump warned Monday that anyone caught vandalizing the National Mall and the adjacent Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool faces years in prison.<\/p>\n

“Of the MANY Statues and Fountains that we rebuilt, renovated, cleaned, and fixed, the only one that was Vandalized was the Reflecting Pool, which is being taken care of, ASAP!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “It has been given a 300 foot long gash, chemicals have been illegally placed in the water, and the beautiful new grass field has been destroyed with a gigantic 86 47 chemically carved into it (Probably inspired by Dirty Cop, James Comey!). <\/p>\n

“Please remember that there is a 10 year prison sentence for the destruction, or even the attempted destruction, of such things – Which will be fully enforced!” the president concluded.<\/p>\n

Trump spoke out three days after former US Olympic canoer David Hearn was arrested and accused of vandalizing the recently renovated pool after he reached out and touched a detached piece of liner floating in the water.<\/p>\n

The US government announced Monday it was formally waiving oil sanctions on Iran for the next two months \u2014 as talks to finalize a formal peace deal continue in Switzerland through this week.<\/p>\n

The Treasury Department notice says the waiver lasts through Aug. 21.<\/p>\n

Although the sanctions waiver could in theory net Iran’s theocratic leadership $60 billion annually, Vice President JD Vance defended the looming action last week, saying that the sanctions were difficult to enforce before the war and did not impede Iran’s energy exports, which largely go to China.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
