Senior negotiators from the US and Iran on Monday wrapped up a lengthy round of initial talks aimed at solidifying a permanent end to the war between the countries.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0mediation effort in Switzerland\u00a0started Sunday and had rocky moments. But it also led to some agreements between the two sides.<\/p>\n

Mediators Qatar and Pakistan hailed what they called \u201cencouraging progress\u201d made during the talks as Iran and the United States agreed to create a \u201cde-confliction cell\u201d to address the\u00a0fighting in Lebanon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A senior US diplomat claimed progress on multiple fronts, including the establishment of \u201cmechanisms\u201d to ensure the\u00a0Strait of Hormuz,\u00a0a vital waterway for global energy shipments, remains open and that a cease-fire in southern Lebanon holds.<\/p>\n

Yet the talks between the US and Iran, who were accompanied by Qatari and Pakistani officials, was jolted by blistering statements from US\u00a0President Donald Trump, who from thousands of miles away from the Swiss negotiating venue at a mountainside resort near Lake Lucerne was firing off comments that offended the Iranians.<\/p>\n

Iranian state media said talks had paused after the \u201cpublication of an insulting message by the US President.\u201d The Iranian delegation then met with Qatari mediators and left the negotiating site, state media said. The senior US diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity to brief journalists on the ongoing talks, said late Sunday that the Iranians remained on site and the negotiations were on.<\/p>\n

Iranian state television reported Monday that the Iranian delegation had left the summit site to head to the airport in Zurich to fly back to Tehran.<\/p>\n

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had vowed to \u201cnever back down from the right to enrich uranium,\u201d according to state media, and Trump later told Fox News in a phone interview that Pezeshkian should watch what he says and also threatened to take over Iran, according to one of the news channel\u2019s correspondents.<\/p>\n

Trump also continued to issue warnings against Iran on social media, posting as negotiators worked: \u201cIran must immediately stop their highly paid PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble. If they don\u2019t, we\u2019ll hit Iran very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

The chief negotiators for the US include\u00a0JD Vance, the vice president; special envoy\u00a0Steve Witkoff,\u00a0and\u00a0Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of the president. Iran is represented by\u00a0Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf,\u00a0Iran\u2019s parliamentary speaker, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear when Vance will depart Switzerland, although he told Fox News in an interview Saturday that he anticipates staying only a \u201cday or two.\u201d Kushner and Witkoff are handling much of the technical details on behalf of the U.S. delegation.<\/p>\n

In a joint statement, Pakistan and Qatar said the high-level talks had ended and that technical negotiations would continue in Switzerland for the rest of the week. <\/p>\n

The statement said the sides had agreed to establish a \u201ccommunication line\u201d to ensure safe passage of ships in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as a mechanism to bring about an end to the fighting between Israel and the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon.<\/p>\n

The US offered no immediate comment, while Iran praised the meditators\u2019 work.<\/p>\n

Araghchi wrote on X that Pakistani and Qatari mediators\u00a0delivered \u201cmajor progress to end the Lebanon War.\u201d He added that the first \u201creal test\u201d of negotiations would be whether the mechanism succeeded in halting the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.<\/p>\n

The senior US diplomat said among the issues discussed was Iran\u2019s messaging as it related to the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran\u2019s military said it closed Saturday in response to continued fighting in Lebanon. US Central Command has disputed that Iran closed the strait again.<\/p>\n

The interim deal\u00a0to end the fighting in Iran, signed last week by the leaders of the US and Iran, outlines a 60-day period for negotiators to settle the future of\u00a0Tehran\u2019s nuclear program\u00a0amid concerns that it wants to use it for military purposes, a claim Iran denies. <\/p>\n

The fate of frozen Iranian assets, among other thorny issues, are also on the agenda.<\/p>\n

Though the talks will encompass a vast array of complex matters, Iran first wants to focus on addressing the fighting in Lebanon.<\/p>\n

Saturday\u2019s renewed cease-fire in Lebanon appeared to be holding, and Israel\u2019s military said it would lift movement restrictions for residents near the Israel-Lebanon border on Monday morning. Neither Israel nor Hezbollah is a signatory to the US-Iran deal.<\/p>\n

There was cautious calm Monday in Lebanon, with no Israeli strikes reported overnight after a day of quiet Sunday. <\/p>\n

Hezbollah likewise has not announced any attacks on Israeli forces since Saturday.<\/p>\n

The lull in fighting in Lebanon is the longest since the outbreak of the latest Israel-Hezbollah war on March 2.<\/p>\n
