{"id":2670,"date":"2026-06-22T09:09:32","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T09:09:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=2670"},"modified":"2026-06-22T09:09:32","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T09:09:32","slug":"keir-starmer-chokes-up-as-he-resigns-as-uk-prime-minister-less-than-2-years-after-landslide-election-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=2670","title":{"rendered":"Keir Starmer chokes up as he resigns as UK Prime Minister \u2014 less than 2 years after landslide election win"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Sir Keir Starmer choked up as he announced his resignation as UK Prime Minister Monday \u2013 paving the way for newly-elected MP Andy Burnham to succeed him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=2668\">Goose \u2018reeling\u2019 after dad Paul Kueker fell to his death at Madison Square Garden concert, learned tragedy while \u2018getting off stage\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Starmer, 63, set out a timetable to stand down after coming under mounting pressure following last month\u2019s local elections, where the governing Labour Party lost\u00a0over 1,000 seats.<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister announced his intention to step down after admitting the Labour Party was questioning whether he could lead it into the next general election, scheduled for 2029, just 23 months after leading his party to a landslide win.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace,\u201d Starmer said outside 10 Downing Street\u00a0in London.<\/p>\n<p>Every decision I\u2019ve taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party. I have spoken to His Majesty the King this morning to inform him of my decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Starmer confirmed nominations to elect a new leader will open on July 9 and the process will be completed by the summer recess.<\/p>\n<p>This now paves the way for either a coronation or a contest where Labour members will decide who is the party\u2019s next leader, and the UK\u2019s next Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<p>Burnham \u2013 the former Greater Manchester mayor \u2013 is the overwhelming favorite to succeed Starmer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Polling revealed he would have comprehensively defeated Starmer if the Prime Minister decided to contest any leadership election, which he vowed to do so as recently as Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The next Prime Minister will be the 7th to hold the esteemed office in the 10 years that followed the Brexit referendum.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Starmer said he will remain as Prime Minister until there is a new leader.<\/p>\n<p>Starmer\u2019s voice cracked with emotion as he concluded his speech \u2014 thanking his wife, Victoria, for being a \u201crock \u2026 in good times and bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I leave the biggest job in the country, I shall spend more time on the most important job, being the best husband I can to my fantastic wife Vic,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd being the best dad I can to my beautiful children who are my pride and joy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Starmer spent the past weekend at the Prime Minister\u2019s country retreat of Chequers, considering his future in light of Burnham\u2019s storming win in the by-election held in the\u00a0North West England constituency of Makerfield.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=2666\">LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho resigns four months after FBI raid<\/a><\/p>\n<p>He had previously vowed to fight any leadership election in the wake of Burnham\u2019s victory before realizing the game was up, according to a senior Labour figure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat he rightly wants to avoid is humiliation, but the worst humiliation for Keir personally would be if he stands in a leadership election and is heavily beaten,\u201d they told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Labour suffered devastating losses across England\u2019s post-industrial heartlands, where they were routed by Nigel Farage\u2019s insurgent Reform UK Party.<\/p>\n<p>Labour also lost more than 450 seats in London alone \u2014 with the left-wing Green Party making gains in what were Labour strongholds.<\/p>\n<p>Labour was also swamped in Scotland and Wales, losing control of the latter\u2019s devolved parliament \u2014 the Senedd \u2014 for the first time since its creation in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>Starmer suffered a wave of resignations in the wake of the local elections drubbing. <\/p>\n<p>Health Secretary Wes Streeting resigned after admitting he had lost confidence in Starmer\u2019s leadership \u2014 and blasted the Prime Minister for a lack of vision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut where we need vision, we have a vacuum. Where we need direction, we have drift,\u201d he wrote in his resignation letter.<\/p>\n<p>Just last week, Starmer lost his Defense Secretary John Healey over the government\u2019s defense investment plan.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cYou have been unable, and the Treasury has been unwilling, to commit the resources that the nation needs to defend the country at this time of rising threats,\u201d Healey told Starmer\u00a0in his resignation letter.<\/p>\n<p>Starmer\u2019s popularity has plunged after repeated missteps and U-turns on policies such as welfare reform, as well as his disastrous decision to appoint Peter Mandelson, a scandal-tarnished friend of Jeffrey Epstein, as Britain\u2019s ambassador to Washington.<\/p>\n<p>The Labour government, elected in a landslide in 2024, has also failed to deliver promised economic growth and ease a longstanding cost-of-living crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=2664\">Exclusive | Los Angeles\u2019 Sunset Strip is now on struggle street.
