Embattled Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho has resigned \u2013 almost four months after the FBI raided his home and office as part of a fraud and corruption probe.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Carvalho, who held the role for just over four years, tendered his resignation Sunday and said it would be effective immediately,\u00a0 the Los Angeles Times reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been a great honor to serve you,\u201d the 61-year-old wrote in the note seen by the outlet.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the past four years, together, we have made historic progress \u2014 gains that belong to our students, our educators, staff and our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his resignation letter sent to the LAUSD, Carvalho said he didn\u2019t want to become a \u201cdistraction\u201d to students.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlacing students first has always guided my work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He made no direct reference to the ongoing FBI investigation, which sources revealed is linked to a corruption scandal from a botched AI education company, and LAUSD officials say a statement will be issued later.<\/p>\n

The former leader of the nation\u2019s second-largest district, who was on a salary of $440,000, has been on paid leave for almost four months. <\/p>\n

LA Board of Education members voted on Feb. 27 by a margin of 7-0 to put him on leave.<\/p>\n

The unanimous verdict came just two days after raids were executed at his $2.5 million San Pedro home, his office at LAUSD headquarters in downtown Los Angeles, and another location in Miami tied to the probe.<\/p>\n

Agents armed with long rifles swooped on the San Pedro home before the Portuguese-born official and his wife\u00a0Maria Florio Borgia Carvalho were handcuffed and put into the back of a car, the Los Angeles Times reported.<\/p>\n

Cellphones, computers and paper documents were seized by agents during the search.<\/p>\n

School board members and staffers were ordered to leave the LAUSD headquarters while agents carried out their search.<\/p>\n

In 2024, Carvalho, the former head of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools district, heavily touted an education technology company that developed an AI chatbot named \u201cEd\u201d for the Los Angeles district to help students, calling it \u201ca game changer.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

But less than three months after unveiling the technology and paying the company $3 million, the district dropped its dealings with AllHere, which collapsed into bankruptcy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Months later, founder, Joanna Smith-Griffin, was charged with securities and wire fraud, along with identity theft. Carvalho was not named in this investigation.<\/p>\n

The Florida raid happened at the home of Debra Kerr, a successful salesperson who has clients including AllHere.<\/p>\n

Carvalho, a former Superintendent of the Year in 2014, has not been charged with any crime and the LAUSD said it was cooperating with investigators.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Carvalho respects the rule of law and the investigative process and has always acted in the best interests of students and within the bounds of the law,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile the government\u2019s investigation remains ongoing, no evidence has been presented by prosecutors supporting any allegation that Mr. Carvalho violated federal law.\u201d<\/p>\n
