                                        {"id":2638,"date":"2026-06-21T21:11:18","date_gmt":"2026-06-21T21:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=2638"},"modified":"2026-06-21T21:11:18","modified_gmt":"2026-06-21T21:11:18","slug":"gm-replaces-more-than-1000-workers-with-50-robots-at-flagship-detroit-plant-were-disgusted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=2638","title":{"rendered":"GM replaces more than 1,000 workers with 50 robots at flagship Detroit plant: &#8216;We&#8217;re disgusted&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>General Motors has gutted its electric-vehicle ambitions and killed more than 1,000 jobs at its flagship Detroit assembly plant \u2014 replacing those workers with 50 robots and sparking outrage from labor unions.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=2636\">Revealed: The mystery blonde behind Trump\u2019s cryptic post \u2014 and who her \u2018great\u2019 daughter is<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The replacement \u201ccollaborative robots,\u201d or \u201ccobots,\u201d have been installed on the assembly line at GM\u2019s Factory Zero plant in Michigan amid a sharply reduced demand for its EV models and the ensuing push to cut costs, reports said.  <\/p>\n<p>The machines are now working alongside the remaining humans there who attach the body panels to vehicles as they move down the track, according to AutoBlog.<\/p>\n<p>The automaker insists the cobots are necessary at the Detroit-Hamtramck electric-truck plant to stay competitive while improving \u201csafety and ergonomics\u201d for the workers, according to Crain\u2019s Detroit Business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been installing cobots across our manufacturing footprint as part of a broader push to bring more advanced technology into our operations,\u201d spokesman Kevin Kelly said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Factory ZERO, we are implementing them alongside our team \u2014 helping improve safety and ergonomics, while keeping our operations flexible and competitive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But United Auto Workers Local 22 President James Cotton isn\u2019t buying it, saying the machines are simply a cost-cutting measure that is taking jobs from his union members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur manpower is being taken away from us,\u201d Cotton said, according to Crains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom top to bottom, we\u2019re disgusted that they have cobots in our plants,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The number of labor hours required to produce a car has declined 50% to 70% since the 1980s, Crains reported.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=2634\">Sen. The union was able to make historic wage gains in 2023, and the union will likely seek stronger protections in its upcoming 2028 contract negotiations, the outlet said.<\/p>\n<p>Cotton said that despite the company\u2019s claim of the technology making conditions safer, he has safety concerns with robots working next to humans and that the union has since filed grievances against GM over the cobots.<\/p>\n<p>The cobots arrived as GM is getting hammered by slowing EV demand \u2014 largely because of the costs, according to AAA \u2014 with the automaker pausing production at Factory Zero multiple times over the past year.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In response to GM\u2019s heavy automation push and cobot installation, UAW President Shawn Fain said workers are \u201cin a fight for humanity,\u201d reported the News Tribune.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fruits of our labor have multiplied like never before, but workers aren\u2019t reaping the harvest,\u201d he said, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if AI continues to be used as an accessory to that crime, it has to be stopped \u2014 it doesn\u2019t have to be this way \u2014 in a just society, when workers create more value, they see more of the benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the first quarter of 2026, GM reported $4.25 billion in profits, up 22% from the same period the previous year, according to Yahoo!
