Senior US officials have balked at a report that the US, United Arab Emirates \u2014 or any other country \u2014 has freed billions of dollars in frozen Iranain assets in exchange for Tehran halting all attacks on the UAE.<\/p>\n

Reuters last week claimed two unnamed regional sources told them the UAE had agreed to hand over $10 billion \u2014 with more than $3 billion of that having been already sent \u2014 as part of a cease-fire side deal.<\/p>\n

The UAE\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has since denied the report, as have senior US officials including Vice President JD Vance \u2014 insisting Iran would not be receiving any of the dough until it takes \u201cmeaningful steps\u201d to denuclearize.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is interesting just reporting on this, and I really don\u2019t know where it\u2019s coming from, but we suspect that there are some elements within the Iranian hardline system who are trying to signal to their allies or maybe their domestic audience\u201d because they oppose the tentative US-Iran peace proposal, a senior US official said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe very simple fact is $0 of unfrozen assets have been released by the United States or any other country,\u201d the source said \u2014 adding it was \u201cpreposterous\u201d to suggest the UAE made a \u201cside deal\u201d with Iran without the US knowing.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the sanctions and most of the international regulations that tie back to [unfreezing] assets \u2014 only the United States has control and influence over,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n

Reuters had cited two additional \u201csources with knowledge of the arrangement\u201d who claimed that the underhanded deal involved at least $20 billion, \u201cadding that the move had been agreed in return for a halt to Iranian attacks on \u2060the UAE.\u201d<\/p>\n

The UAE\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in its denial that \u201cthese allegations are entirely false and unfounded\u201d and stressed that \u201cno frozen Iranian funds have been released, transferred, or facilitated through the UAE.\u201d<\/p>\n

The senior US source insisted that the Gulf states \u201clove\u201d the tentative peace proposal, and \u201cbecause of that, you\u2019re not going to see Qatar or UAE or any of these other countries cut side deals without the Iranians.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re their friends. We\u2019ve been in very close coordination, not just during this operation, but for a very long time,\u201d the source said. \u201cSo, the idea that any of these countries would cut side deals with the Iranians is not just unlikely but preposterous.\u201d<\/p>\n

The rumors of asset-unfreezing later spread to include Qatar, with the Financial Times reporting Thursday that the US would allow Qatar to release $6 billion in frozen Iranian assets for Tehran to buy \u201chumanitarian and non-sanctioned goods from the US\u201d after the signing of the US-Iran peace memorandum of understanding.<\/p>\n

But Vance denied that report from the White House podium Thursday, telling reporters that \u201ca lot of this reporting is just fundamentally wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve seen some reports \u2014 I don\u2019t know where this came from \u2014 that the Qataris have released billions of dollars in Iranian assets. That\u2019s just not true,\u201d he said. \u201cIt would be impossible for the Qataris to do that without our buy-in, and certainly without us seeing it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t get one dollar of unfrozen assets \u2014 their money, not our money \u2014 but they don\u2019t get one dollar of unfrozen assets until they actually perform under the deal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
