WASHINGTON \u2014 A deal to end the war between the US and Iran is expected to be signed within the next 48 hours, possibly \u201cremotely,\u201d and may not necessarily require a formal ceremony in Switzerland on Friday, a senior US official told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s talk right now about maybe just having it signed remotely, and then either way we\u2019re meeting Friday,\u201d the official said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to be going through the details.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Memorandum of Understanding is seen as a largely \u201cpolitical document\u201d and a starting point for negotiations during a 60-day period for lifting US-imposed economic sanctions on Tehran, ending its nuclear ambitions and establishing a reconstruction fund for the Middle East nation.<\/p>\n

Upon its formal\u00a0signing Friday, the Strait of Hormuz, through which between one-fifth and one-quarter of the world\u2019s seaborne oil passes, will be reopened and a cease-fire will begin in the region that includes other nations like Lebanon.<\/p>\n

Relaxed sanctions will come in the form of a waiver for Iran that will allow it and other Persian Gulf nations to \u201cpump oil like crazy,\u201d the official noted.<\/p>\n

US and Iranian officials had been planning to officially sign the document in Geneva on June 19.<\/p>\n

President Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Iran\u2019s parliament speaker\u00a0Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf electronically signed it Monday, according to administration officials.<\/p>\n

Trump traveled to Geneva earlier this week for the annual G7 summit with European leaders and expressed optimism about the outlook of the deal when pressed by reporters Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have an understanding of certain things without writing it, and if they don\u2019t honor that, we\u2019ll probably go back to bombing them until they honor it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
