EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France \u2013 President Trump formally rejected the idea of regime change in Iran Tuesday, saying he \u201cnever cared\u201d about it \u2014 despite calling early in the war for the Iranian people to rise up against their clerical rulers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou talk about regime change. I never cared about regime change. It [was] never a part,\u201d Trump said during a meeting with Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on the sidelines of the G7.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In February, Trump said the overthrow of Iran\u2019s hardline theocratic government would be \u201cthe best thing that could happen\u201d to the Middle Eastern nation and he later called on the country\u2019s people to finish the job started by US and Israeli airstrikes, telling them \u201cthe hour of your freedom is at hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the first hour of the war Feb. 28, with his son Mojtaba taking over the reins.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess you have regime change,\u201d Trump told Al Thani Tuesday, \u201cbecause you know better than anybody, the first group, they\u2019re all dead. The second group, they\u2019re dead. A part of the third group is gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re dealing with people that I think are very rational people,\u201d he went on. \u201cThey were nice to deal with. They were strong people, smart people. I think actually they\u2019re smarter than the first and second group, but they\u2019re not radicalized and they\u2019re, you know, looking to help their country.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a result, Trump said, the relationship between Washington and Tehran \u201cis now normalized.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president then predicted that a second round of technical talks meant to take place over a 60-day window \u201cis going to go quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIran wants to get it done. They want to get back to business,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
