It was before the April 3 shootaround\u00a0when Dolan gave an impassioned 15-minute speech, recorded on video, that implored his Knicks to sacrifice everything with an unyielding commitment across the next 10 weeks of the playoffs to compete a mission years in the making \u2014 and 53 years in all \u2014 that would make every one of them champions and kings of\u00a0New York with rings for one and all for the rest of their lives.<\/p>\n

10 Weeks to Glory.<\/p>\n

10 Weeks that would change their lives and the lives of their loved ones forever.<\/p>\n

The Future Was Now.<\/p>\n

And the owner believed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if you understand what it would mean to win the NBA championship,\u201d\u00a0 Dolan told his Knicks. \u201cIt would be life-changing\u2026 It will stick with you the rest of your lives. And if you don\u2019t win, you\u2019ll be thinking about it the rest of your lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

And if you do win, this team will belong up in the rafters with the 1970 Knicks and the 1973 Knicks.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will\u00a0forever ever be important to New York City,\u201d Dolan said. \u201cNo matter where you go and what you do the rest of your lives, when people introduce you, even if you become the president of the United States, they\u2019ll start off with \u2018NBA champion, 2026.\u2019\u00a0 \u2026 That\u2019s what\u2019s at stake here.\u201d<\/p>\n

So seize the moment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe big word is sacrifice. You\u2019re going to have to sacrifice if you want to achieve this,\u201d Dolan said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s only 10 weeks, it\u2019s not a long time. . . Sacrifice everything you got these next 10 weeks to win that championship.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know you can do it\u2026 You<\/em> know you can do it. I believe you know you can do it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWill<\/em> you do it?\u201d<\/p>\n

He offered suggestions:<\/p>\n

He implored his Knicks to eliminate distractions and bind together even tighter.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of this 10 weeks, what you achieve is what the public\u2019s gonna think of you \u2014 not what you say in the press conferences, etcetera,\u201d Dolan told them.<\/p>\n

He offered other suggestions:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou need to bump your practice. You need to pay more attention to your diet. You need to sleep better. You need to be ready for every game\u2026 That\u2019s not something you start on the first game of the playoffs. That is something you start right now, today!\u201d<\/p>\n

And one that was intended as a joke \u2026sort of.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had this idea that maybe you should give up sex for the next 10 weeks \u2014 you don\u2019t have to give up sex for the next 10 weeks \u2014 BUT \u2014 like the Spartans, you know what Spartans are? They denied themselves, right?\u00a0So that they can have an edge. Get the edge.<\/p>\n

\u201cGo home, talk to your wives and tell them \u2014 don\u2019t tell them you\u2019re not gonna have sex, don\u2019t tell \u2018em it was my idea \u2014 but let them know what this is gonna be like, what your commitment is gonna be like, and how they\u2019re gonna have to sacrifice too. Those concerns at home, they can\u2019t come on the court. It\u2019s not who we play, it\u2019s how we play.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I believe this team can beat anybody<\/em> in the NBA.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Post could not immediately confirm how many of any of the players lived that Spartan existence but the Knicks sure proceeded to play with that edge across those magical 10 weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a pretty serious mood going into the playoffs,\u201d Brown told The Post. \u201cWhen he said that, I was like, \u2018Mike, hold yourself together. Do not fall out. Focus on his words.\u00a0Focus on his words. Try to keep this as serious as you can. And let\u2019s see how it plays out with the players.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut there was no way that I could get that done,\u201d he added with a laugh.<\/p>\n

Dolan went on:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen<\/em> we win the championship, we will get rings. And when we get rings, so will they. I will buy a ring for each one of your significant others, because their contribution is gonna be very important to this team winning.\u201d<\/p>

He\u00a0emphasized first-quarter focus and defensive pick-and-rolls and rebounding. \u201cThe next 10 days, fix those three things as part of your focus,\u201d Dolan said, \u201cbecause those are our Achilles heels, and they\u2019ll stop us in the playoffs.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou gotta try like you\u2019ve never tried before.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s only 10 weeks guys.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou gotta go for it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou gotta leave nothing on the table.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou must<\/em> go for it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDo it. Commit to it. Go for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Applause filled the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis speech was effective \u2018cause it was powerful,\u201d Brown told The Post. \u201cIt was impactful, and it added to what messaging we\u2019ve been giving our guys from Day 1, from the Opening Night dinner going into training camp, it added to it. And it added to it on another level because now you have the top guy, the ultimate leader, the guy that owns the team, that writes the checks, saying how he feels in a deep-felt message.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey took it very seriously. We had shirts made up with 2026 playoffs, and on the back we had 10 Weeks. And we even had the slogan 10 Weeks on the wall in the locker room, and as time went on, guys would say, \u2018Hey \u2014 we got 3 weeks left, 3 weeks, let\u2019s lock in.\u2019<\/p>\n

Dolan had lauded Brown for a collaborative approach with the players that he and Rose felt was missing under Tom Thibodeau\u2019s sole voice. It heartened Brown.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

\u201cOne hundred percent this man has my back and we\u2019re aligned,\u201d Brown said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s what I needed to hear. Our business, it\u2019s a tough business, there\u2019s too many different opinions that everybody can see and feel that can create separation or divide amongst a group. And I felt when he said those words, especially about me, that our players and everybody that was around during that speech, knew that we were truly aligned, vertically and horizontally, and it was a strong bond.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brown was heading for an appearance with Jimmy Fallon on \u201cThe Tonight Show.\u201d<\/p>\n

A parade awaits on Thursday.<\/p>\n
