WASHINGTON \u2014 A senior US official said Friday there\u2019s a 75% to 80% chance that American and Iranian officials will sign a peace agreement in the \u201cnext few days.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have received assurances from Pakistan and Qatar that Iranians are ready to sign,\u201d the official told a small group of journalists \u2014 after President Trump\u00a0announced a day\u00a0earlier\u00a0a deal had been reached.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t count our chickens before they\u2019re hatched. Do we have a deal yet? No. But as the president said, we\u2019ve agreed to the concepts, but no deal until it\u2019s signed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The official said Friday, \u201cwe feel 75-80 percent certain we\u2019ll be signing this in the next few days but there\u2019s always some level of uncertainty when you\u2019re dealing with Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dozens of prior announcements have claimed a deal is near, but Trump administration officials insist that peace is truly within reach.<\/p>\n

Vice President JD Vance was expected to travel to Europe to sign a memorandum of understanding with Iranian\u00a0officials \u2014 after Vance led\u00a0in-person talks in Pakistan on April 11-12. It\u2019s unclear when the deal\u00a0would\u00a0be ready to sign, and no immediate travel plans have been announced.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The MOU would not settle all details, but would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while beginning the process of sanctions relief and setting the stage for final talks on destroying Iran\u2019s estimated 1,000 pounds of highly enriched uranium.<\/p>\n

American officials have entertained\u00a0face-saving options for Iran\u00a0that would\u00a0allow for the uranium to be diluted on-site,\u00a0or transferred to a neutral third country such as Pakistan for destruction.<\/p>\n

The US has denied reports that Iran would receive any money upfront upon signing and insisted that any financial relief would come only if Iran fulfills its obligations. Long-running disagreements over the MOU included Iran\u2019s effort to secure $6 billion in assets held by Qatar\u00a0to purchase\u00a0food and medical supplies.<\/p>\n

Peace efforts have been beset by poor communications and factions on each side preferring a more protracted conflict.<\/p>\n

The text of the MOU has not yet been released. But the senior US official said Iran has agreed \u201cin principle\u201d to allow international IAEA inspectors and the US to destroy and remove its nuclear material \u2014 stored in three different locations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The official described the new agreement as the \u201cantidote to the JCPOA [the Obama administration\u2019s 2015 Iran nuclear deal]\u201d because the\u00a0very\u00a0stockpile that was allowed to\u00a0be built\u00a0up [under the JCPOA] would be eliminated.<\/p>\n

Sanctions relief is also outlined in the document, along with a proposed $200 billion investment in Iranian infrastructure by Gulf Arab countries.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s semi-official Mehr News Agency on Friday released a stunning\u00a014-point alleged blueprint\u00a0of the MOU, claiming that the US would release $24 billion in frozen assets \u2014 half before nuclear talks \u2014 a suspension of oil sanctions and a $300 billion reconstruction fund by the US and allies.<\/p>\n

Trump denied the accuracy of that report, which set off alarm among Israeli officials and more hawkish Americans, with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)\u00a0saying it would be\u00a0\u201cakin to a Marshall Plan for Germany with the Nazis still in charge.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe terms that Iran leaked out to the Fake News have NOTHING to do with the terms that were agreed to, in writing,\u201d\u00a0Trump fumed\u00a0on social media.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat they said, including their weak and pathetic statement on having a deal, bears no relation to the truth. Very dishonorable people to deal with\u2026They better get their act together, and FAST!\u201d<\/p>\n

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi appeared to disavow the Mehr report, saying that \u201cthe media should refrain from entering speculation about its content.\u201d<\/p>\n
