                                        {"id":1878,"date":"2026-06-12T18:36:31","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T18:36:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=1878"},"modified":"2026-06-12T18:36:31","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T18:36:31","slug":"exclusive-socialist-dc-mayoral-candidate-who-sought-mamdani-endorsement-bought-1m-home-after-railing-against-single-family-zoning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=1878","title":{"rendered":"Exclusive | Socialist DC mayoral candidate who sought Mamdani endorsement bought $1M home after railing against single-family zoning"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 Far-left DC mayoral candidate Janeese Lewis George, who\u2019s been begging for an endorsement from NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani, bought a million-dollar home in April after suggesting single-family zoning was a tool of \u201csegregation,\u201d The Post has learned.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=1876\">Nearly 50% of tickets for Knicks Game 5 in San Antonio purchased by NY, NJ fans<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The District Councilmember and her husband, Kyle George, purchased the lavish single-family dwelling in the capital\u2019s Manor Park neighborhood, about five miles north of the White House, for $1.19 million April 17, according to DC Office of Tax and Revenue records.<\/p>\n<p>The residential enclave was described by the Washington Post in a 2021 feature as \u201can especially attractive area for families with children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The price tag for George\u2019s pad was nearly double the average home value in the District of Columbia, according to the real estate online search platform Redfin, and almost $500,000 more than the average price for a home in that zip code.<\/p>\n<p>Just 15 days before her home purchase, George had published an op-ed decrying \u201chow exclusionary zoning preserves segregation and exacerbates displacement\u201d and blaming \u201cpolitically-connected wealthy residents\u201d for being opposed to new housing construction.<\/p>\n<p>George\u2019s campaign team has been desperately seeking Mamdani\u2019s support in the June 16 Democratic mayoral primary against former DC Council member Kenyan McDuffie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFormer DC mayors are all backing [McDuffie], so she\u2019s been begging New York\u2019s golden boy to take the Acela down to help activate Washington\u2019s Diet Commie Corridor,\u201d one District Democratic insider told The Post. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut say what you will about Mamdani, he clearly smelled desperation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reps for Mamdani\u2019s office did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The Tudor-style home was built in 1935 and spans 3,122 square feet across three levels. It boasts four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a chef\u2019s kitchen including a waterfall island, vaulted ceilings in the primary suite, a finished basement \u2014 and a luxe sauna, per a real estate listing.<\/p>\n<p>Sweeping renovations in 2023 transformed the brick exterior and gave the home its striking black-and-white Tudor-meets-contemporary look.<\/p>\n<p>The home is also situated in a residential zone of the city that \u201c[d]iscourages multi-household development,\u201d something George has railed against as part of her campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The candidate has claimed her family was forced out of a rented apartment due to \u201cdeeply flawed\u201d zoning policies in the nation\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rent hikes that my family experienced in 2010 might not have been so drastic if single-family zoning in the District\u2019s most affluent neighborhoods hadn\u2019t long-prevented more homes from being built in them,\u201d she wrote in an opinion piece for the Greater Greater Washington website April 2.<\/p>\n<p>Her \u201cHome For All\u201d plan on her campaign website pledges to \u201creform zoning laws\u201d in order to build as many as 72,000 new dwellings \u2014 many of which will be multi-family, or higher density, units \u2014 over the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=1874\">Teen beaten into coma by brute bellowing \u2018Spurs in 7\u2019 during livestreamed Knicks Game 4 NYC brawl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>McDuffie has put forward a more moderate plan to construct 12,000 new housing units and preserve 20,000 existing affordable housing units over the next four years.<\/p>\n<p>The cost of building just one new affordable-housing unit in the capital has been pegged as high as $1.2 million, the Washington Post reported last year, and much of that burden would be shouldered by DC taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p>As an option for footing the bill, George has suggested the District \u201cleverage our pension funds,\u201d earning blowback from the DC Police Union. <\/p>\n<p>Mamdani\u2019s own plan to build a whopping 200,000 new affordable homes over the next decade \u2014 and increase Big Apple housing on city-owned land \u2014 has been similarly met with skepticism.<\/p>\n<p>Still, national labor groups \u2014 including the AFL-CIO and AFSCME \u2014 have been speaking with George\u2019s campaign and reaching out to Mamdani\u2019s team as intermediaries to help broker an endorsement, according to three Democratic sources familiar with the discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Labor leaders like AFL-CIO\u2019s Liz Shuler and AFSCME\u2019s Lee Saunders have been working \u201cvery hard\u201d to set up a meeting that will lead to a public endorsement of George by Mamdani at a DC event, one source noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve just been trying to figure out whether or not it makes sense right now to step outside of New York City to do that, but the level of coordination \u2014 and the amount of money that they\u2019re putting into this race \u2014 is causing the conversations to get into a larger place and where it\u2019s becoming more realistic,\u201d a second source said.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A third quipped: \u201cJaneese thinks she is DC\u2019s Mamdani.
