Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper was arrested Thursday night after he allegedly violated a protection order against him that was filed earlier this week, according to Douglas County (Colo.) jail records.<\/p>\n

Cooper was arrested on misdemeanor charges of violation of a protection order and harassment (repeated telephone calls) \u2014 which came a week after he and his girlfriend were arrested on June 4 by Parker Police (Colo). following an argument and physical confrontation over cell phones.<\/p>\n

The protection order Cooper allegedly violated was established for his girlfriend after two additional charges of felony second-degree assault by strangulation and misdemeanor third-degree assault were added from his June 4 arrest, per court records.<\/p>\n

Cooper had a court hearing Friday morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are disappointed to learn of Jonathon Cooper\u2019s arrest on Thursday and continue to review this matter,\u201d the Broncos said in a statement.<\/p>\n

He attended Thursday\u2019s practice for the Broncos\u2019 offseason program \u2014 and coach Sean Payton said he had a \u201clong visit\u201d with Cooper about the arrest, according to ESPN. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd now the process plays out,\u201d Payton said. \u201cThe league obviously will be very much involved in that. We\u2019ll stay abreast, but much like you all. I think that\u2019s where it\u2019s at. We just go from there.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 We\u2019ll stay as informed as possible. We\u2019ll follow the league\u2019s guidelines, and I\u2019m sure a lot of that will be led by the local authorities\u2019 guidelines. We\u2019ll pay attention to all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cooper is scheduled to have a motions hearing in a Douglas County courtroom on July 6 with the potential for a jury trial on July 22, according to NFL.com.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Cooper\u2019s attorney, Harvey Steinberg, said the defense doesn\u2019t plan to file a motion to dismiss the charges and requested a trial date as soon as possible so that Cooper wouldn\u2019t have to miss any training camp workouts.<\/p>\n

He is subject to discipline under the NFL\u2019s personal conduct policy.<\/p>\n

Cooper pleaded not guilty to his original misdemeanor domestic violence charges on Monday.<\/p>\n

According to Cooper\u2019s June 4 arrest affidavit, his girlfriend confronted him about allegations of infidelity and she took his phone and threw it across the room.<\/p>\n

His girlfriend\u2019s arrest affidavit claimed Cooper \u201cgrabbed her by the neck and held her against the wall for about a minute\u201d and he alleged he also picked her up and threw her on the ground three times.<\/p>\n

A police officer stated in the affidavit that marks on Cooper\u2019s girlfriend\u2019s neck and body were not consistent with an assault.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Both affidavits said Cooper bit her phone and caused disabling damage to it. <\/p>\n

The seventh-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft posted a Bible verse and an apology on Instagram Saturday. <\/p>\n
