Maybe Mayor Zohran Mamdani was trying to squeeze in more of his \u201cwarmth of collectivism\u201d when he added Bryant Park, at the last minute, as a watch-party site for the NBA Finals, but what he got instead was mayhem: huge brawls, youths jumping on cars, tearing down street signs, setting fires, attacking cops.<\/p>\n

And it was the NYPD\u2019s Strategic Response Group \u2014 you know, the one Hizzoner wants to disband<\/em> \u2014 that rushed in, as usual, to save the day.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis city has come together to cheer on the Knicks and share in a moment that belongs to all of us,\u201d Mamdani gushed Monday (the morning of the game!) as he announced that Bryant Park would complement Central Park and the Brooklyn Bowl as a watch-party site.<\/p>\n

Whose idea was it to add a much smaller venue? It was limited to 5,000 celebrants; thousands more failed to get in, and so swarmed the streets around the park.<\/p>\n

And even before the final buzzer \u2014 when the Knicks succumbed to the San Antonio Spurs 115-111 \u2014 the crowd began fighting, pouncing on cars, ripping down street signs, throwing bottles, disrupting traffic, punching cops and refusing police orders to disperse.<\/p>\n

Numerous people were hurt, including five NYPD officers.<\/p>\n

Cue the SRG, whose mission is to quell riots, out-of-control protests and destructive chaos like at Bryant Park.<\/p>\n

The team swooped and soon contained the violence, cleared the streets and restored order; cops took 21 individuals into custody, slapping eight with charges.<\/p>\n

Mamdani (and the rest of the city) owe the SRG a big thank-you for limiting the damage.<\/p>\n

Yet on Tuesday, his press spokesman told The Post the mayor is still working \u201cto end the SRG.\u201d <\/p>\n

Critics claim it\u2019s overly aggressive, citing gripes about its work countering the George Floyd riots of 2020.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

And Mamdani preens about the need to protect New Yorkers\u2019 First Amendment rights \u2014 though those don\u2019t in fact extend to rioting, vandalism or other violence.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s where the SRG comes in, and where it proved its value yet again Monday.<\/p>\n

Oh, it also responds to other emergencies, such as when a madman opened fire at a Park Avenue office building last year, killing Police Officer Didarul Islam.<\/p>\n

The good news: Mamdani seems to have taken no steps so far <\/em>to actually scrap the unit.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s hope he keeps it that way \u2014 just in case his collectivist warmth gets too hot to handle again.<\/p>\n
