Caitlyn Jenner\u2019s friend and ghostwriter William Hasley has been identified as the Runyon Canyon hiker found dead last Saturday.<\/p>\n

The 78-year-old, who was also a screenwriter and former husband of actress Robin Riker, penned Jenner\u2019s book \u201cFinding the Champion Within\u201d\u00a0for Simon & Schuster.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 1996 self-help book described Jenner\u2019s athletic accomplishments and aimed to use a 10-step program to \u201creboot\u201d the readers\u2019 life.<\/p>\n

Hasley said in his biography they became \u201cfast friends\u201d while he was working on an Olympics-related project before the former athlete commissioned him to write the book.<\/p>\n

The writer was found in an area near Runyon Canyon at about 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. Air rescuers attempted to save the man but were unsuccessful.<\/p>\n

A neighbor near his home, located near Runyon Canyon, expressed regret about his lonely death.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI just saw him on Saturday carrying groceries,\u201d the neighbor told The Post. \u201cIt\u2019s very sad he had to die all alone like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Temperatures in the Los Angeles area were cool, in the mid-to-low 60s, around the time of Hasley\u2019s death. It was not clear how he died.<\/p>\n

\u201cLAFD Air Operations lowered rescuers to the patient, and medical treatment was administered,\u201d an LAFD spokesperson said. Officials pronounced Hasley dead at the scene.<\/p>\n

The Hollywood screenwriter\u2019s television credits include \u201cSwift Justice;\u201d\u00a0\u201cGhost Stories;\u201d\u00a0\u201cMurder, She Wrote;\u201d\u00a0\u201cKung Fu;\u00a0Young Riders;\u201d and\u00a0\u201cHighway to Heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also wrote screenplays for Universal Pictures, Warner Brothers, and 20th Century Fox, among others.<\/p>\n

His actress ex-wife, Riker, became a star on the Showtime sitcom \u201cBrothers\u201d as Kelly Hall in the 1980s. She became a television regular for the next decade, and saw her most recent notable credit on the long-running \u201cThe Bold and the Beautiful\u201d show as Beth Logan.<\/p>\n

Hasley was also an instructor in screenwriting at UCLA. He said he helped students \u201cdevelop your own distinct style into a concise and creative screenplay for today\u2019s ever-changing marketplace.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

His biography described him as an environmentalist who also enjoyed riding horses, sports, teaching, and volunteering.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Will isn\u2019t meeting a deadline, you\u2019ll most likely find him fighting City Hall over an environmental issue, writing an article, teaching a writing class at UCLA, volunteering in a soup kitchen, or speaking to a youth organization,\u201d the biography said. \u201cWill\u2019s a great sports enthusiast. He\u2019s often playing in a Celebrity Golf Tournament, Showbiz Softball League, or riding horses with the infamous Hole in the Wall Gang.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner\u2019s Office has not released a cause of death, deferring any official determination.<\/p>\n

The California Post reached out to reps for Jenner and UCLA for comment.<\/p>\n
