San Francisco Democrats Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris may publicly sing each other\u2019s praises \u2014 but the frenemies are privately at each other\u2019s throats as they both eye a 2028 White House bid.<\/p>\n

The two star Dems may be careening towards a \u201cmurder-suicide,\u201d as one advisor once put it to the San Francisco Chronicle, if both decide to run for president, as petty feuds over book sales, a \u201chiking\u201d snub and Harris\u2019 decision to stay out of the California governor\u2019s race boil over behind closed doors.<\/p>\n

Newsom and Harris are at the top of 2028 Democratic presidential polls in what could be their first head-to-head competition since they both launched their careers in San Francisco more than 20 years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve been kind of like two cats, circling each other in an alley for years, politically speaking,\u201d Democratic strategist Garry South, who worked for Newsom, told the Wall Street Journal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The longstanding rivalry between them erupted when the two released memoirs within months of one another, sources said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Newsom and Harris kept watch on one another\u2019s book sales: Harris\u2019 book released in September, \u201c107 Days,\u201d has sold roughly 385,000 copies while Newsom\u2019s \u201cYoung Man in a Hurry\u201d has sold more than 100,000 since its February release, the WSJ reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A Newsom ally told The Post that the governor was \u201cp\u2014ed off\u201d and \u201cvery hurt\u201d when Harris spilled in her book, \u201c107 Days,\u201d that Newsom snubbed her when she reached out for support after Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race.<\/p>\n

\u201cHiking. Will call back,\u201d Newsom reportedly texted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The California governor felt Harris made him look like a jerk when he had actively stumped on her behalf and even gave her a rousing introduction at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.<\/p>\n

The personal tension only deepened after Harris declined to run for governor \u2014 a race many Democrats believe she could have easily won \u2014 while continuing to tease another run for president.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe knew he was going to run for president,\u201d the source close to Newsom told The Post. \u201cWhat he was hoping she would do is have the common sense to run for governor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harris said in April she \u201cmight\u201d run for president, while Newsom has indicated he\u2019ll make a decision sometime after the November midterm elections.<\/p>\n

Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown helped launch both Newsom and Harris\u2019 careers starting in the 1990s. He appointed Newsom to the Board of Supervisors in 1997 and briefly dated Harris in the mid-90s, helping her eventually become district attorney.<\/p>\n

it\u2019s no secret which San Francisco prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Brown thinks has the juice to win in 2028.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Harris\u2019] failure, once she ran for president with the ticket of Biden, was an ultimate disaster,\u201d Brown said in an interview. \u201cAnd then her book did not enhance in any way that failure.\u201d<\/p>\n

A source close to Harris insisted she did not see the Newsom anecdote in \u201c107 Days\u201d as a hit job, just a fact.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of the chronicling of what people said that day \u2014 she didn\u2019t editorialize,\u201d the source told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a lot of things in [Harris] book that people were rightfully like, whoa.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Newsom allies were less charitable, describing Harris as \u201cvindictive\u201d \u2014 a trait they said goes back to her days as San Francisco district attorney, when Newsom was mayor.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s the kind of person who will still stick a pin in your ass if she doesn\u2019t like you,\u201d a source close to Newsom said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
