The Lorne Michaels-produced show, based on the canceled AppleTV+ series, won the all-important Tony Award for Best Musical at Radio City Music Hall.<\/p>\n

It badly needed it. Like most new musicals during this rough season, the comedy about a married couple who gets trapped inside an old-fashioned musical has had soft ticket sales in recent weeks. The top prize at the Tonys \u2014 the only one that really drives box office \u2014 should give it a helpful boost as summer begins.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t say the same of the cast\u2019s groaner of a performance of its sluggish and cutesy title song. The victor came off dusty and boring \u2014 and it is! \u2014\u00a0and\u00a0not funny or particularly new. And it\u2019s not! \u00a0<\/p>\n

The big-budget rock spectacle \u201cThe Lost Boys\u201d had more gusto, but the production was unable to showcase\u00a0its\u00a0greatest asset:\u00a0The\u00a0jaw-dropping aerial stunts. A producer told me they didn\u2019t want to risk the audience at home seeing wires attached to actors.\u00a0The pricey loser will now have its work cut out for it to wind up a financial success. It\u2019ll need to run for years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The best song-and-dance of the night came from the fabulous Best Musical Revival nominee \u201cCats: The Jellicle Ball,\u201d which takes Andrew Lloyd Webber\u2019s 1980s felines and turns them into modern-day New Yorkers having a hugely fun ballroom competition in Harlem. Yet it\u2019s hard to say how many lives the kitties have left\u00a0in \u2019em\u00a0after Sunday\u2019s\u00a0crushing\u00a0loss.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0winner of that category \u2014 a crime, by the way \u2014 \u201cRagtime,\u201d did an uninspired and snoozy rendition of their\u00a0loud-and-long\u00a0opener. That revival also\u00a0rightly took home Best Actor and Actress in a Musical\u00a0for the wonderful\u00a0Joshua Henry and Caissie Levy.<\/p>\n

Luke Evans from \u201cThe Rocky Horror Show\u201d rocked the house with \u201cSweet Transvestite\u201d and then the full cast did a high-spirited \u201cTime Warp\u201d\u00a0that should put some laced-tights butts in seats.<\/p>\n

The little guys, \u201cTitanique\u201d and \u201cTwo Strangers (Carry A Cake Across New York),\u201d were not well served by the vastness of Radio City.\u00a0They got swallowed up like a piece of chiffon sponge.<\/p>\n

The original cast of \u201cThe Book of Mormon\u201d reunited for the 15th anniversary of the hit comedy \u2014 and millions of people learned that Andrew Rannels and Josh Gad can no longer sing those roles. Oof!<\/p>\n

That was one of many dumb choices in the broadcast\u00a0that went on and on. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of \u201cA Chorus Line,\u201d Rachel Zegler sang \u201cWhat I Did For Love.\u201d\u00a0She\u00a0sounded pretty, but\u00a0the somber song felt like another\u00a0In Memoriam. Why didn\u2019t they hire some dancers to kick-line to \u201cOne\u201d?<\/p>\n

The\u00a0winning\u00a0plays don\u2019t really need to sell any tickets. Best Play \u201cLiberation\u201d closed in the winter. And the superb Best Revival \u201cDeath of a Salesman,\u201d which also\u00a0snatched up\u00a0Featured Actress (Laurie Metcalf) and director, among a bunch of other trophies, is already one of the year\u2019s biggest\u00a0hits.<\/p>\n

John Lithgow won Best Actor for his towering turn as Roald Dahl in \u00a0\u201cGiant\u201d \u2014 53 years after his first win! \u2014 and\u00a0British star\u00a0Lesley Manville took home her first Best Actress Tony for her mother of a performance in \u201cOedipus.\u201d\u00a0I was especially pleased to see Alden Ehrenreich walk to the podium as Best Featured Actor for his revelatory work in \u201cBecky Shaw.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weirdly, Pink, who has never been in a Broadway show, hosted the ceremony honoring the best of Broadway. The \u201cSo What?\u201d singer\u00a0smartly\u00a0poked fun at the randomness of her gig.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor some reason, I\u2019m your host, Pink,\u201d began her monologue. Funny!<\/p>\n

And the big number she kicked off the broadcast with, an enjoyable spin on her song \u201cLady Marmalade\u201d from \u201cMoulin Rouge\u201d reworked to be \u201cLeading Lady Marmalade,\u201d was rousing. It featured a ton of cast members from the nominated shows \u2014 always a good idea.<\/p>\n

But from there, Pink flopped. The material written for her was terrible, especially one mystifying\u00a0skit\u00a0about free speech.<\/p>\n

\u201cSoon we may not be able to say what we believe,\u201d Pink said. Huh?\u00a0She then\u00a0asked various stars\u00a0such as Rose Byrne and Kelli O\u2019Hara\u00a0to speak their truths. They awkwardly told lame jokes. Awful, awful, awful.<\/p>\n

The Tonys talked a big game\u00a0this year\u00a0about having shiny new producers.<\/p>\n
