President Trump expressed hope that Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is \u201cmore rational\u201d than his father as he reiterated his insistence that a deal with the Islamic Republic is \u201cvery close.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president also rejected criticism that he has taken the US into another \u201cendless war\u201d and kept the possibility of snatching Iran\u2019s enriched uranium by force a top priority.<\/p>\n

\u201cYounger. I think more rational,\u201d Trump told NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press\u201d in an interview that aired Sunday when asked about how the supreme leader compares to his late father, the assassinated Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.<\/p>\n

\u201cInjured. He\u2019s pretty badly injured. So there\u2019s a certain bravery there,\u201d Trump said of Mojtaba, who was caught in the Israeli strike that killed his father on Feb. 28 and hasn\u2019t been seen in public since the war in Iran broke out.<\/p>\n

After over five weeks of fighting, the US and Iran agreed to a cease-fire on April 8 and have spent the past two months negotiating a framework for a peace deal. <\/p>\n

Trump has been insistent that Iran surrender its stockpile of 60% enriched uranium, which is a few technical steps away from weapons-grade enrichment. <\/p>\n

Other Trump administration officials have publicly insisted that the US should get Iran\u2019s 20% enriched uranium supplies as well, though it\u2019s not clear if that\u2019s a dealbreaker for the president. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019re very close. We have a couple of points,\u201d Trump said on the deal being negotiated with Iran. \u201cThey don\u2019t even seem like big points. They\u2019ve conceded the fact that they will not have nuclear weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n

Late last month, Trump sought edits to the framework being negotiated with Iran for a broader peace deal. <\/p>\n

Trump also stressed that the status quo \u201cisn\u2019t sustainable\u201d for Iran as the US blockade ensures Iran is \u201closing $400-500 million a day.\u201d Trump imposed the blockade on Iran in April in response to the regime wreaking Havoc on the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re strong. They\u2019re proud. There are things they never thought they\u2019d be doing that they\u2019re going to have to do. They\u2019ve got no choice. And it takes a little while,\u201d the president replied when asked why Iran isn\u2019t caving. \u201cYou know, you\u2019re talking about 47 years of getting away with whatever they wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n

The war in Iran has divided elements of Trump\u2019s MAGA base due to his railing against \u201cendless wars\u201d in the Middle East during his campaign for the presidency. <\/p>\n

But the president rejected that backlash.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t promise anything. I don\u2019t like these endless wars. This is not an endless war. We\u2019ve been doing this for three months. Much of it has been under the form [of] a pretty good form of cease-fire,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe destroyed the capability of Iran in a matter of days. Nobody\u2019s ever seen anything like it. Now I\u2019m going to finish it. But remember, you were in Vietnam [for] 19 years because of stupid people. You were in so many different countries,\u201d he added. \u201cLook at Iraq. You were there for years.\u201d<\/p>\n

During his wide-ranging interview on \u201cMeet the Press,\u201d Trump also reiterated that he is willing to use military force to retrieve Iran\u2019s highly enriched uranium, something that is widely seen as a highly complex and risky operation. <\/p>\n

However, Trump stressed that he would prefer to send US troops into Iran once a deal with the theocratic regime has been inked. <\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d Trump said when asked. \u201cBut the way you do it is if we make a deal, if we make a deal now we\u2019re friendly, we\u2019ll all go together. It\u2019ll be our equipment. We\u2019ll take it out and destroy it, whether it\u2019s on-site or whether we take it off-site.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, if we don\u2019t make a deal, then we\u2019re going to take them out militarily very harshly,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd we\u2019ll wait till we do that before we go, in which case we\u2019ll have safety either way.\u201d<\/p>\n
