DUBAI \u2014 Iran has reaffirmed support for its Lebanese \u200bally Hezbollah and demanded Israel withdraw from southern Lebanon, underscoring complications facing an interim deal to end the\u00a0broader conflict\u00a0between the US and Iran.<\/p>\n

Iran has made a \u200ccease-fire between Israel and\u00a0Hezbollah\u00a0a condition for any peace deal with Washington to resolve the regional war, now in its fourth month, and restart shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

The latest round of fighting between Hezbollah and Israel erupted at the start of March, two days after the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran. Hezbollah said its actions were in support of Tehran.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis war will end only when it ends in Lebanon as well,\u201d Iranian \u200bForeign Minister Abbas Araqchi told Lebanese TV station Al Mayadeen late on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe end of the war on Lebanon must be accompanied by the withdrawal of Israeli forces from \u200bthe territories they have occupied,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The comments came after Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem rejected a US-brokered pact between Israel and the Lebanese government to \u2060halt the fighting in Lebanon. The deal did not provide for an Israeli withdrawal and Hezbollah had not been party to the negotiations.<\/p>\n

Israel has kept up strikes in southern Lebanon, and has said \u200bits forces would not withdraw or halt operations in the country amid increasing friction with the US.<\/p>\n

Hezbollah said on Friday it had carried out two attacks on Israeli troops in south Lebanon, including near the \u200brecently captured Beaufort Castle, while Lebanese security services said Israeli airstrikes hit towns across southern Lebanon.<\/p>\n

Fighting flares across region despite cease-fires<\/h2>\n

Mohsen Rezaei, an adviser to Iran\u2019s supreme leader, said Hezbollah had \u201cmade great sacrifices in the recent war and it is our ally. Therefore, we support Hezbollah and remain firmly committed to our obligations toward it.\u201d<\/p>\n

In comments reported by the semi-official Mehr news agency, he cautioned Israel against following through on threats to resume strikes against the \u200bLebanese capital, Beirut.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday we again warn this sinister regime to leave Lebanon. They should know that Lebanon will be an inseparable part of any agreement and any cease-fire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lebanon\u2019s parliament speaker and Hezbollah \u200bally Nabih Berri said on Friday he would agree to the withdrawal of the Iran-backed group from southern Lebanon if Israeli troops simultaneously left territory they occupy in the country.<\/p>\n

In Washington, President Donald Trump told reporters he \u200cbelieved progress was \u2060being made in Lebanon and the country deserved to have peace.<\/p>\n

Along with Lebanon, residents of Gaza, northern Israel and Kuwait have all been under fire this week, despite US-arranged cease-fires that Trump said involved \u201cshooting in a more moderate manner,\u201d rather than a total halt to fighting.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Iran\u2019s navy said it had fired warning shots at US destroyers in the Gulf of Oman to counter \u201cmaritime mischief and harassment and the hijacking of commercial vessels and oil tankers.\u201d Earlier, US forces said they had boarded an oil tanker in the Indian Ocean and said they would continue to block \u201cvessels providing material support to \u200bIran.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Oman, an alleged drone attack forced the suspension of \u200boil loading at the Mina al Fahal \u2060terminal after an explosion, sources said, before normal operations resumed.<\/p>\n

Interim deal would leave complex issues for later <\/h2>\n

After the US and Israel launched the war against Iran on February 28, Iran fired missiles and drones against Gulf states hosting US bases and largely stopped shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

Trade \u200bremains at a fraction of its former levels through the waterway, which previously carried about a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas \u200bsupplies.<\/p>\n

The conflict has driven \u2060up oil prices and disrupted supply chains for other products. The UN World Food Programme warned on Friday that it was pushing millions of people closer to hunger due to rising fuel and transport costs.<\/p>\n

The US and Iran have been engaged in largely indirect negotiations to secure an interim deal to halt the war that would leave issues, including Iran\u2019s nuclear program, to further negotiations.<\/p>\n

As part of any agreement, Tehran wants access to \u2060billions of dollars \u200bin oil revenue, waivers on sanctions on crude exports, a lifting of a US blockade on its ports and \u200bleverage over the strait.<\/p>\n

Trump, who faces domestic pressure over an unpopular war, has said his top priority is to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Iran says its atomic program is for peaceful purposes.<\/p>\n

Iranian parliament deputy speaker Hamid-Reza Haji Babaei said on Friday that \u200buranium enrichment was Iran\u2019s right, and that Trump had failed to understand that Iran\u2019s \u201cmost powerful atomic bomb\u201d was the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n
